So I have a buyer from Canada who ordered something from me for about $21.
They contacted me the other day saying that upon delivery they were charged
$12 for import fees and they paid it to receive the package.

Now the buyer is telling me that they didn't know about any import fees before
buying the product and since I also didn't mention anything about import fees in the listing
they think it's my fault and wants me to pay them back the $12 they paid to the postal man.

My question is, as the seller, am I responsible for import fees or is the buyer responsible for it?
I told the buyer that the import fees are not charges from me but from their country customs.

    What should I do?
I think if I don't pay them for the import fees they'll probably just leave me negative feedback.
I don't think they can open a case on something like this unless they wanted to return the item,
but even still they'd only get their refund but not the $12 import fee.

Also, if the buyer didn't want to pay the import fee, shouldn't they just have rejected the package
and then it would automatically be return shipped to me? If they already went ahead and paid for it,
    then that was their decision.

yes, I didn't put any note or message on any of listings. So what do you mean it's a whole different story? Do you mean the buyer than has a case against me? Could they open a case and claim something about it? They have the product, the delivery was completed, but I've never had any case opened against me that wasn't about "did not get my item".

You picture says: paste this directly into your listing...

He din't do that if he did it.. than there was no problem. If it was me i would sue you for not mention it on your website and i believe i would win the case even it's just about $12 :)

i would say ask him/her for the receipt to be sure that they paid it and than pay them the $12 back. and put the import duties on your website.

Thanks, I think this explains it clearly. I guess I should put that little paragraph on all my listings from now on.
Is there a way to put this paragraph in all my 200+ listings at one time or do I have to manually input it 200+ times? Yikes.

Yes I did. Is DHL notorious for these fees?

Buyer would still be responsible for import fees. The only difference is they either pay up front or when it arrives.

I think I'll just play it safe and call it a lesson learned. I'll pay back the $12 and just paste that paragraph into all my listings from now on.

Yes DHL is terrible for Canada, so is UPS.... if you're from the states, ship by USPS if possible

I would suggest to split the cost with him in return for a positive feedback once he post a positive give him his 6 bucks well worth it.

If he complains then send him the link to the buyer is resp9nsibke for customs.

I went through this probably 100 plus times back in my eBay days...

You are never responsible for customs fees on eBay.
That is ALWAYS on the buyer, and both eBay and PayPal will take your side on that.

I've been selling on eBay for 8 years.

    it the buyers responsibility .

but as protection from ebay and payal
they can get there cash back if you didnt mention it on the advert ....

if you dont tell the user that there could be import dutys then the buyer can dispute the product and win ....

it part of your job as a seller to tell the buyer what might happen with import dutys....

a good advert say everythink to back your arse up .... it not just to sell a product ...

as advised above offer a 50/50 refund of the import duty.

    put this down as exspirence

If you read the thread op only concern now is a negative feedback if he doesn't pay.

Actually op per the eBay terms what he is doing is called feedback extortion you can basically tell.him sorry I'm not paying see the terms of eBay and if he does leave negative just call eBay and they will see the messages and remove the feedback for you so you don' have to worry.

Just make sure that he clearly asked for you to pay for his customs fees in eBay messaging they won't uphold it if it' in email or text etc...

EXACTLY. redarrow is a very weird member... all he does is summarising what other people posts. He used to inflate his post count in the lounge but has stopped doing so when he realised his post count didn't go up. Now he is mass posting nearly every single thread found in BHW. What's worst is you can never entirely understand what he's typing (assuming English isn't his native language).

Not sure is he trying to compete with proxygo's post count (only difference is proxygo provides valuable posts and content to BHW).

@Zwielicht may want to take a look at it.
