    Guys

At weekends I do voluntary dog walking for a rescue shelter. They are trying to fundraise to buy their own kennels as at the moment they rent them.

A popular way to raise money offline for things like this is Buy a Brick. So I was thinking about doing this online and doing it as buying a virtual brick. As well as being for a good cause I thought maybe people would be inclined to buy them as a remembrance for a lost pet too.

I 've had a look to see if I could find something like a php script for this but couldn't find anything so wonder if any BHW's could suggest how I could do this. (My skills are limited but I'm willing to try )

    Thanks guys

I am familiar with fundraising by selling bricks but what is a virtual brick? Most people buy a brick because they want to have their name as part of something big.

Where will people see their name?

Can you use a website service that sells real bricks but make sure to let donors know that it is a virual brick?

Can you do a real project at the shelter where the bricks will be?

Each brick will be around $15-25. Some bricks are of very poor quality and some engravers allow you to provide the bricks. Get their recommendations or research online for tips as donors do not want their name on a cracking brick.

    Maybe create something like this:

    Code:
    http://milliondollarhomepage.com/
Sell space on your site, market it as buying "bricks" of space instead of pixels. There's tons of clone scripts for that site. I've never tried it so I'm not sure how easy to use those scripts are.

It would be images of bricks as such on a webpage hence the virtual brick, their name would appear on the image of a brick.

The problem with doing it off line is the shelter would be purchasing ready made kennels, not building from scratch

Instead of buying a brick, maybe people will pay money to have a kennel named after them or their own pet. Then, if they want to visit the kennel, they can see the actual kennel with their name on it.

Who knows, after a while, it is possible that the donor will feel an attachment to the pet and adopt it.

Yeah I think this is a great idea actually. I can see something like that really taking off if you got some big animal rights or pet blogs talking about it.

It could basically work the same way as the million dollar homepage...they can buy 1 pixel (or 1 brick) for like $1, and if they wanna buy 100 it would be $100 and so on. Then they can customize the brick to say a name of a pet or something.

I would think if this project took off, you could end up making way more than what you need for just kennels and any extra can be used for other things they need or even donated to help other shelters and what not. If people know all the money is going to a good cause, they would be more likely to buy bricks.

By the way, that's really cool what you're doing Fluke with the volunteering. I'm looking to start volunteering at some local animal shelters too. I'd donate some money to your shelter for the kennels but I just recently donated 1k to a few different shelters around the holidays before I saw this thread.

Anyway, hit me up if you want to talk more about the brick thing...I'd love to help you out with it if you want me to. I've been thinking of starting a new project anyway where 100% of the profit goes to animal shelters and rescue groups. This one sounds like it would be fun.
