I found a 1 year old, expired EMD (PR1) with a few authentic backlinks on it, but it does have a hyphen in it. I always read not to put a hyphen in your domainname, so should I better buy a new domain (EMD if possible) or is it worth to buy this expired domain?

If you would like to go for the EMD, why not. Otherwise it is not worth it as a PR1 is fairly easy to get.

Exact Match Domain (The domain name is exactly the name of your focused keyword)

I won't bet on an EMD after Google have devalued them. Just get a branded domain.

I have quite a few for medium comp keywords, in fact I mostly use hyphened EMD domains, as they are easier to read.

A bunch of my Amazon sites are hyphenated, like, 3 or 4 times :p And they're ranking nicely for the most part.

If you want, buy it for the age and the links, but the hyphened emd won't give you any extra boost.

If it has your keyword in it, and little to no other 'fluff'; then go for it! It is not necessarily about the domain name after the recent updates. It still plays a major factor, but other things can be more important.
