Business rank switching from Organic to Local after penguin 2.1. Crazy stuff!

I work full time at a company here in NYC that provides a local service - doing SEO and miscellaneous marketing, and what I noticed after penguin 2.1 is that the organic results in this niche has been pretty much taken over by news websites and crap like that. The first page of results used to be full of businesses and companies that provide the service, but now it's just full of sites like nytimes.com, forbes.com, yahoo news articles, etc.

The kicker is: although the company I work for is no longer #1 organically for these keywords, they are now #1 in the local/places results, which they weren't before. So it seems to me like Google is letting local businesses have the local results, but keeping most organic spots for the big guys.

Does that sound viable? Wouldn't this mean that there IS a link between organic ranking and local placement? WILL scooby and the gang ever solve the mystery of the serp haunting gouls???

    Has anyone noticed anything similar?

That's exactly what Google is trying to do: turn the WWW into its controlled sponsored site listing. Their search results look like amazon or ebay listings.... It won't be long before they inject their affiliate code in there.

Google is now a computer generated commercial directory of big brands. There IS a link between organic search and money, it is obvious to anyone, no need to be a SEO expert. Therefore it's not organic anymore.

This happened in Payday, for a while almost all the results were newspapers. Seems Google has really turned up authority recently so those sites rank over ones that are more relevant.

Haven't seen it much on local listings though.

I meant link between organic rank and local rank, because this site uaed to rank high just organically, and now it ranks high just locally, as if Googled just gave the link power to local instead of organic.

I noticed this as well in the past two weeks working with a few estate agents they've moved from the top of Google Local to the two organic spaces above and aren't in the local listings anymore.. I hope when they take a dip in the rankings they'll move back into the top position on Google Local as before.

Google always do what it is best for their company. It's main intention is to lower the traffic from main arena, still giving hope in the local arena. we see these type of things changing update after update. But, having those news sites at top is easier for us to beat with balckhat methods as well. So, there is a chance now to rank again.

@OP, what Google did was merge the website organic listings with the Google Plus local results. So before this update you would be able to rank a business website as well as a Google Plus listing on the first page for blended results. Since the update this is no longer possible and they will show only the G Plus local listing for blended results.

The heavy hitter big companies are dominating Google's organic results, so you just need to be creative when looking to rank a local business. If you already have position in the 7 pack and can't get your clients website ranked then rank their top reviewed business listings. If Google wants to show yelp in the number one position then leverage that and rank your clients yelp listing.

Yep! That's the reason why I stop on SEO and focus on S*******C, lesser work and inexpensive...100,000+ visitors in a month!

Yes it's the same in the UK, notable as well is, a drop in adwords listings since this last update, in local keywords anyway. Simple fact is businesses that are advertising are looking for offline alternatives because they are fed up with google moving the goal posts. There are far more effective ways for local businesses to market themselves, google is simply speeding up the time the bubble bursts having directories taking over the first page. Let them carry on and bing will see a nice shift.
The payday loans niche is a classic example, people want a payday loan and get news and wikis pages but not what they are actually looking for. They realise payday loans can be very effectively marketed offline right ? maybe they don't.

Eventually the directories showing will gain little because people will use other methods of marketing and will not rely on google as much. It hasn't affected me or my clients but I notice it. This happened with the previous penguin update but got sorted, this looks to be staying.

Anyway if you're in local, learn real marketing you and your clients will then see ranking as a bonus not a must.

I posted a thread exactly like this a couple weeks ago in Warrior Forum. And none of those dipshits had a clue what was going on.

To be perfectly honest, this thread is confirmation that my main website my NOT be penalized.... AFTERALL.

Because I noticed the same exact thing. My home page dropped from page 1 for various keywords, and now
its just my stupid fucking Google local that shows up. When previous I was getting MOST of my traffic from
    my site.

Goddamn if this is true this is a nightmare. This would also explain why I lost long tail pages as well. Because
my google local ranks for those keywords already and google does not want my long tail pages ranking.

The cumulative effect has resulted in a 60-80% drop in traffic. I have reviews on my google local but people
do NOT click on Google local as much as they click on organic sites. I know this for a fact cause the day my
#1 organic ranking was replaced with google local, that same day I had a MASSIVE drop in traffic.

If Google wants to play dirty, I'm raising the stakes X10000000000000.

I've already created a fresh site 4 weeks ago, with NO google local listing for the same niche, and that site
is on its way up to page 1. So now if I want to rank in both Google local and organically, I basically need
    2 websites for every niche.

No problem Google. I'll tell you what, I'll do 4 websites for every 1 niche I target... you fucking assholes.
Fuck dat shit I'll do 10. 10 sites for every 1 niche. Every fucking listing on page 1 will be a website that
    I own.

When you do Google local it helps to have a domain.com/cityorlocation for the local page then rank the domain not the places landing page this helps with this problem, there is many other things you can do to keep it from happening but this is the main one.
