I work full time at a company here in NYC that provides a local service - doing SEO and miscellaneous marketing, and what I noticed after penguin 2.1 is that the organic results in this niche has been pretty much taken over by news websites and crap like that. The first page of results used to be full of businesses and companies that provide the service, but now it's just full of sites like nytimes.com, forbes.com, yahoo news articles, etc. The kicker is: although the company I work for is no longer #1 organically for these keywords, they are now #1 in the local/places results, which they weren't before. So it seems to me like Google is letting local businesses have the local results, but keeping most organic spots for the big guys. Does that sound viable? Wouldn't this mean that there IS a link between organic ranking and local placement? WILL scooby and the gang ever solve the mystery of the serp haunting gouls??? Has anyone noticed anything similar?
