    Hi,

I was wondering about building my own URL shortener. I'm I right in thinking that if I use other one then then i'm only building links for that website right?

    Anyone ever built one?

I actually know someone selling a already made URL shortening site. PM me if interested. I'm sure he can help you set one up if you don't wish to buy one.

it's always a good idea to built your own, why?
the answer is pretty simple: you control it

because what if the owner decides not to provide the service anymore, it's not a good feeling if you already have a few thousand links alll over the web using that dead service (see: offto.net, it was a very reliable shortening/cloaking service until it was gone from one day to another after years)

here ya go, 10 Free Scripts to Create Your Own Url Shortening Service

Personally I was testing a theory that floats around occasionally; that sites rank better without affiliate links on them.

I've found that links to certain companies seem to be best hidden behind lilURL, but for most of them, it doesn't matter.

Other than that, the link juice goes to the site with the script on it, so there are some SEO possibilities with that...

Does the link juice automatically pass to the link shortener site? Somehow I don't think so. I'm using yourls script and it is a 301 redirect from source to target. link juice flows, not accumulates.

How about capturing link juice with a meta refresh or javascript redirect?

    Thoughts?
