building web2.0's is lowering my rankings... can I target competitors with this?

    Questions:

    1) is this just a temporary dance do you think?

    2) if building web 2.0s can lower the rank of the target site for the keyword used, can this be done maliciously to competitor's websites?

    Really?
It will only make your competitor's positions stronger rather than losing ranking :)

So building web 2.0s lowers my ranking but linking them to my competitors would improve their ranking?

    lol :D

uhm... most likely yes... is your site new and not backlinked properly? .. can't see any reason why web2.0s would hurt your rankings...

    Define "backlinked properly."

The site is 3 months old and I've been building web2.0s to it pretty slowly. I didn't even begin until the site was a month old. Maybe like 1 site a day on average. Diverse keywords, not over-optimized.

I'm really confused though because I thought there was nothing that anyone else could do to your site to lower its rankings. Therefore, worst case scenario would be that you build web2.0s and nothing happens. Otherwise, people could build them to their competition's websites to hurt their rankings.

    A sampling of keywords.

    keyword 1:
    1/1: #9
    1/14: #16
    1/24: #30

    keyword 2:
    1/1: #50
1/14: #35 (this increase happened before I even built any links for this keyword)
    1/24: #60

    keyword 3:
    1/1: 68
    1/14: #41
    1/24: #67

    keyword 4:
    1/1: 90
    1/14: 98
    1/24: 105

Seems weird to me, I've never really had this issue with any other sites before. The site is legit, all pages are indexed, it's not overrun with ads, it's all unique, hand-written content. The average time on page is 5 minutes plus because it's good information (as opposed to spammy stuff that gets a short on page time and high bounce rate).

It seems like a statistical outlier compared to my other sites which is why I'm confused.

Oh, the web2.0s aren't spammy, either.

The site continues to increase in rank for the keywords I'm not targeting, but as soon as I target those keywords it appears to drop in rank. For example, with keyword #2 above. It was moving up in the SERPs for that keyword, and then I made a few web2.0s for it and suddenly it dropped its rank for that keyword.

I'm assuming this is just a Google dance and Google is just figuring out what to make of the new linkjuice.

most likely dancing or due to a first 'boost' in the serps because of certain links you were building.. if not maintained with same quality/amount then google will drop you again... this has nothing to do with you building web2.0's though
just keep linkbuilding and remember to diversify.. don't stick just with web2.0 but go social bookmarking, wiki's, forum, blog comments, etc..

That's the problem with looking at the progress over roughly a month, there can be so many other factors that could have come into play. For example, you may have been hit by the most recent Googs update.

Are you only doing web 2.0 links? If so then you need to shake up those links and build some other types

Web 2.0's seem to be what helps my sites the most, as long as you use unique content and build a few backlinks to them.

    It's all unique content.

What sort of backlinks are you building to the web2.0s?

I just don't understand all of these threads that keep popping up, asking about trying to build links to a competitor's site, thinking it's going to somehow hurt them. I don't get it. Focus all of the time, effort, and energy on your own site and you will do fine.

This happened to me a few days ago but I'm still holding on to the prospect that it'll be a dance.

I paid for 2 SENuke blasts (with some high PR profiles) + a load of do-follow wikis. Considering the amount of backlinks I've got pointed at this site I'm quite surprised that it is dancing at all.

Don't those things go pretty fast and get you an unnatural amount of backlinks over a short period of time which can send up some red flags with Google?

    I think it's a natural question.

Build links to your own site --> see it go down in rankings

It's only normal to wonder if you can do the same to your competitors.

google dance I think. My site did this and it came back stronger. one keyword went from 25 to 175 then a week or so later showed up at number 10. Its a 2 month old site.

Dont stop working on it keep posting content.

The same happens to my new site too... After I start some linkbuilding, they go to page 10... no linkbuilding anymore :)
