    Hey,

I've search a bit for this but have found nobody who has asked this already.
So lets say you wanted to keep your link profile relatively 'clean', if you were to build backlinks to a 301'd domain that is pointing to your main site/money site would the new backlinks have any benefit or would they be useless since it is already 301'd?

Since link juice, PR, and ranking move across 301 redirects, you can safely build links to a 301 redirected domain - and it's very good actually, cause, if the domain get suspended in the future, you'll be able to change the redirect to a different domain thus moving the links profile you build to a new fresh domain; ranking, juice & PR will go through to the new domain.

Same goes for canonical tag where one can build links to a website that points, cross-canonized, to a different website thus preserving the links juice, rankings and PR

Thanks for the reply but I am a bit confused regarding the risk of a penalisation, will that be too the domain that the 301 is pointing too, or to the 301'd domain its self?

If it gets a penalty due to all of the links you're building he means - you can just unhook it from your site and point it to someone elses, or to google, etc.
