I dont understand this. If I have 20-30 web 2.0 properties, I obviously want to build whatever links to them (Article directories, comments, etc.)

But I see people will do things such as create web 2.0 profiles to that 1st tier, then backlink those web 2.0 profiles. Why do people do this?

Why not just blast the crap out of your 1st tier so they get that link juice?

depending on the niche your in. If you want the site to stay ranked then i would not just blast a ton of links out. IMO that is just throwing your money away when google does updates and you loose these links.

Look at your site as a real business then go after getting links from sites that make the most sense.

A SB blast rarely pass on any linkjuice due to the amount of OBL. The mainreason is to get g. to notice your link.

Open linkwheels are usually only effective with weak competition keywords. To go for the top in any decent level of competition, you need a linkpush/link pyramid style strategy.

There's a lot of reasons for this. Tiered linking looks much more natural in Google's eyes, and is of course much more time-proof for future algorithm changes.

Even though you're getting less overall links to your website, the link juice power of those tier 1 properties is proportionately stronger. In a competitive niche, this is necessary as you will never be able to outrank competition with a crappy linkwheel backlinked with SB.

Also, you are creating more distance between your money site and the low-quality backlinks by using an additional tier of web 2.0s. Probably a good idea for an important money site, or a serious business. I don't want anything remotely blackhat NEAR my offline business site. Plus it may be more effective (I never tested it) to backlink your Web 2.0s with more Web 2.0s as the links are generally more valuable. It's a lot of work, might not be necessary for a lower-comp niche, but it's something to consider.
