So I'm looking at a competitors backlinks  something interesting I have noticed. Their backlinks are filled with strange blogs. Looks like they have build up their own blog network. I would post links, but can't.

E.g. say they want to rank a money site about carpets for the keyword "Red Carpet". They will then proceed to create and index like 200 blog posts on a bunch of simple blogs they have created and include the anchor link "red carpet" even if its not relevant to the article. These blogs might say they're about "beauty tips", but they'll post about everything and anything. Each of these blogs has hundreds of posts.

Then to increase those blogs, they'll backlink to them from more crappy blogs they've built.

How did they do this? It seems genius.
