I was just curious if I am optimizing a legit site (one I dont want banned by google in a few months) and I need more backlinks, does it hurt to post your url on guestbooks? Usually I use the appropriate anchor text but I wanted to know if this could potentially hose me. Thanks for the help.

I'm not using any type of software, I am just curious as to if this could be a good backlink.

I don't see why not. I remember reading somewhere that posting on .gov domain guest books was a great way of getting backlinks.

if you doing it manually YOU WILL NEVER get banned for it :)

try to get AS MANY AS POSSIBLE backlinks

and dont worry that 99% of them are nofollow /this is really only prevent for do not follow index page/ but there is always some strenght of them.

Keep various anchors not only "keyword1" "keyword1" try mix them but remember , content is the king but links are the queen :)

To keep it short these links are shit and a waste of your time. Search engines can tell that these links come from guest books. It won't hurt but you will be lucky to get any results. If you don't believe me go ahead and knock yourself out submitting and let me know if you get any results :D

When it comes to gov and edu backlinks you should read this: on gov and edu

And when it comes to nofollow. You will still get link juice, just not PR. More info on nofollow. I actually have solid proof of this :)

It wouldn't hurt if you did but you do know it's not sustainable if you're looking for containment.

Put it this way.. a guestbook link is better than no link at all.

Acquire quality links.. as many as you can.. but don't acquire
too many links.. too quickly, or else.. alarms will go off at Google.

find some automated software to do this and spend time doing other things like writing content for your websites

Yes these links are pretty weak. At best do a few of them, and they will not hurt you unless you have hundreds.
