    Hi guys,

I think this is a pretty noob question, but I'm trying to figure out which way to go. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Let's say I want to build an authority site around dog breeds (I don't). Would it be better to have 1 site with an EMD of dogbreed.com and then have all of your subcategories (dogbreed.com/poodle, dogbreed.com/labrador, etc)?

OR have a crapload of micro sites with EMD's (labrador.com, poodle.com, etc) that point back to dogbreed.com?

I would think that money aside, the 2nd way is best except for what the hell do you now put on the main authority site to keep it relevant. What do you guys suggest?

I think the first option is the best, you build one site for all your related keywords. the second option will be much more expensive, beacuse you have to build content for each one that domains, in order to rank them, 6-7 articles minimun per site. Good luck

Have a general term on your niche, then build some categories under your main niche,

    for example

    my niche is dog breeds

my categories will be poodle, labrador, and other dog breeds.

you might want to search more about on website silo.

I would personally do it like this, Since I think this is how google prefers it.

    Poodle.dogbreeds.com
    english-pit-bull.dogbreeds.com

Then if you have the money I would then do this.

english-pit-bulls.com links to english-pit-bulls.dogbreeders.com (can also use web 2.0's to do this, but if you have the money use the web 2.0s to point to english-pit-bulls.com)

this should trickle down some link juice and serps, feed the main site Dogbreeders.com

Then throw in some article directories pointing to the 2nd layer (dog breed name.com)

Can also do some funny dog cartons and start sharing them on face book pointing back to dogbreeders.com

Then do a lot of guess posting, Posting on dog breeders forums. gotta get that traffic it does play a huge part I think for authority sites.

Honestly who would consider a site an authority if it only has a few thousand people monthly.

Just my 2 cents, building an authority site takes one of two things

    1. a lot of money
    or
    2. a lot of time

Sometimes it takes a bit of both!

Best of luck (sometime you find niches that do not require a lot of work, but they are getting harder to find)

Wow, thanks for the great insights. I didn't even think of subdomains. Yes, you're right. It's getting harder to find "easy" niches. Thanks for some really awesome thoughts. +rep

The purpose of Authority site is not to rank for one particular keyword rather than provide useful content to the use on the niche in general (15+ Keywords) . So anyone who suggests you to go fir EMD is wrong. Unlike MNS authority sites provide real content and useful stuff the the visitor. Also EMD's have negative effect on the visitor.

Example: Let's say you are interested in finding out which is the best breed for dogs. You have two results :
    thebestdogbreed.com
    dogworld.com
Which one will you choose? Obviously the second one.

    Home Page:
Subdomains aren't your best choice (like someone suggested above). Link juice isn't passed to subdomains, which means that it will take much longer to rank those sites.

To make it easy on yourself you want to do LSI keyword research, then build a silo site using xsitepro

That way you'll get the same rankings with 90% less back-linking effort
