Whats up guys. After a bit of lurking, experimenting and brainstorming I've hatched a plan. My goal is to monetize a niche that I am very passionate about. I started my account last week and have gotten almost 500 followers. No scripts or bots have been used. All of the followers are legitimate and active, on some posts I get up to 200 likes. This is because I interact with my followers and feature some of their posts. In turn, they promote me to their friends which I promote as well. It is a tedious process however it is very rewarding because there is a very little margin of inactive/ghost followers.

Anyways, on to the plan. By becoming a big page in this niche, there is the opportunity of being a part of real live local events and selling merchandise. So I decided I'm going to manage two accounts.
My organic and unique method of gaining followers will remain a slow and steady grind on my main account. However, on the second account the plan is a little different.

I am going to write my own bot utilizing Instagram's API and use the typical follow/unfollow scheme. I will not unfollow for a while, the ratio of followers and unfollowers does not matter at this point. I may buy a shoutout from a big (100k+) page and do a lot of liking and commenting. It is important to note that these followers will be coming out of one niche, the same as my legitimate account.

    Chain of events:
Artificial account: Reach 5k Followers -> Buy 10k followers.

At 15k followers I will have a respectable and non-suspicious engagment rate as the followers will still enjoy the content, however there now will be ghost followers in the mix.
I will then employ the same follow/unfollow method and at the same time exchange shoutouts with other pages until 30k is reached.
Once 30k is reached I will post content and slowly start buying followers by the 5k, over the span of a week. During this time the same method as before will be used to gain organic niche followers.
At 60k it will then be possible to branch out and start giving shoutouts to other pages and also my organic page.

Keep in mind my organic page will be growing in unison. Lets say out of that 60k only 10% of the followers are real and engaging in the content. That's 6000 potential leads to my real page, which will greatly increase the traffic on my real page.

This same process will continue until my artificial page is very well known and I will start reaching out and offering shout out services.
My merchandise line will be advertised on the big page and this artificial page will act as a "sponsor" even though it is my account. Sponsors are very common to see in my niche, however it is unlikely that a sponsor and smaller page are the same people.

I'd like to mark today, November 2nd as Day 1. I am creating my second account now and this process will begin.
Expect to see daily updates and comments/thoughts.

    Thanks for reading guys!

I wouldn't buy followers at all if I were you.

I wouldn't buy either. Number of active followers will degrade over time anyway. By buying followers you will speed the process up.
Second, make sure that your followers are not liking your photos just because you follow them. You can't follow 20K accounts.

I guess I'll see how long it takes to generate a large following.
    UPDATE:
So far in about 2.5 hours I have gotten 225 followers. I have not coded my bot yet, so I'd say this is pretty good progress so far.

It won't continue at that rate with manual following. I only do manual and have a very high engagement...I like new people and unlike old people on the same day. Instagram will slow you down eventually.

Thank you guys for tuning in. To finish off the day I achieved about 440 followers and counting. Will be unfollowing in increments here and there. Lets hope that Instagram gives me the green light to use their API soon. My code is in rough but working shape right now, the only thing stopping me is their restricted access.
If anyone is interested in any custom bots to be made, let me know. I'm a web developer/software engineer and am testing the usefulness of Instagram's API by experimentation.

Nice to see you've set a goal for yourself. Do not buy followers OP; I have experienced failure many times with fakes, learned my lesson!

Good luck with your journey, but I wouldn't recommend buying followers.
Keep in mind that not everyone of your real followers will engage with your media. Engagement is usually somewhere between 7-10% but can go as high as 20% and as low as 4% depending on the niche.
So taking your 60k/6k example, you'll end up with a 60k account and an engagement rate between 0.4% (4%RoE of real Followers) and 5%.(20%RoE of real Followers).
And that's going to hurt your shoutout business. I personally wouldn't buy shoutouts from an account with only 5% Rate of Engagement. And I wouldn't even bother looking into an account with 0.4%.

But those are just my 2 cents.

This is gold. Thank you for breaking it down like that. I am climbing my followers on my "spam" account fairly quickly and it doesn't seem like it could falter besides getting a temp follow ban... Which I learned quite quickly.
Let's say though, that I have a 60k account with a 15% engagement rate. This is a clean 60k without any bought followers and just simple f/unf, etc. Of course this will take a bit of time but for the sake of this example lets use it.
That's 9000 real, engaging followers. At this point I can start doing some shoutouts and by your standards it seems 15% is a lot more reasonable than 5%. Followers will come quicker because of the appeal of trading shout outs with other large pages and at the same time if I was to supplement 5k fake followers for every 5k real followers till 100k I'd have still a reasonable engagement rate of 12%. At this point, 100k is a lot more impressive and from there is simply a matter of cashing in through shoutouts and growing slowly through tedious but legitimate methods. What do you think? I'm not pushing the idea of buying followers, I'm simply curious on what your take is. I'm new to this and I'm trying to take a "numbers game" perspective here.

This isn't a joint venture bud.

Thank you everyone else for the kind words!

UPDATE: Reached 1200 followers by the end of today on the "spam" account and hit a 24/hr temp follow restriction. This was done manually through the app. So going to have to be a bit more careful moving forward.
Didn't touch my organic account. Got about 50 followers just from posting.

that's a way to go, butbe careful when you buy followers. Don't buy 5K at once. It will look suspicious. I always track the accounts I want to buy shoutouts from. So choose a vendor, who has a "follow-over-time" option.
12% is a good RoE. But expect your RoE to go down a little bit, the more you grow. You will have ghost accounts, who follow you but aren't active anymore. the older your account gets, the more ghost followers you will have. This is due to people stop using instagram or switching to new accounts.
And yes 100k is a lot more impressive, especially with a >10% RoE.

Remember to always keep track of your followers and what they like. If you want to monetize your account, it's also important to know when they like and where they are from.
do you create your own content or do you repost?
