I'm building an authority site targeting long tail kws and other low hanging fruit

So far I have a small network of pretty powerful sites but I don't want to waste them targeting my inner pages directly, since I feel as it would be a bad ROI

Should I point them all to my root domain? How effective is that?

Pointing all PBNs at only the home page would be a large footprint, especially if the site is huge. If the site is structured well and has good internal linking, PBN links to internal pages should still have an effect on the site.

Mix it up but linking in homepage works better than inner page.

Now I would agree with the first poster, if your site architecture is optimized and your pages have internal linking going on, then it shouldn't matter where you point your pbn.
Home links to Categories (no-follow other home page links)
    Category links to Home page
Long Tail Keywords to Categories or home page.

BUT if your main home page is a silo article, you might want a greater ratio pointing towards your home page...
