I'm thinking about building a digg like site , and the first one that comes to mind is using the pligg cms.
It has lots of templates and resources, but it's also very vulnerable to spam attacks ( from fellow blackhaters  ) so i'm wondering if it's adviceble to build my website with pligg, or try another solution ( like drigg, drupal based ) but with less resources.

Also, pligg uses recaptcha. Is it efective?
Any help from fellow blackhatters ( that spam pligg ) or pligg based websites are welcomed.

I had a pligg bases website(hobby of mine). Then I have been spammed to death.Pligg site now dead. The end.

I had a pligg site as well. It was a pain with spammers, a lot of time blocking and publishing. But I sold it on sitepoint for a decent profit so would probably do it again.

I guess it depends on the purpose. If you are going for a really niche targeted site, then maybe its not for you as you get spammed quite a bit.

However, if you are just trying to get a site that has decent ranks for backlinks, etc, the site is great, since it can pretty much cut the 1k alexa rank pretty easily without doing much work (adding a few links)

hope this helps

My pligg sites do pretty well in the SERPs, and they are all 100% dup content. In fact, I outrank many of the sites I copied from.

The trick? DO NOT ALLOW PEOPLE TO POST (spam is terrible). Use it like a wordpress blog!

Pollfactory advice is spot on. I have pligg based sites in many niches. The trick is not allow any users to post. I have many sites, signup registered users (outsource posters). For example outsource them to post and pay them using the share of profits made from adsense, affiliate banners and other methods you use to monetise the sites.

My method was to throw lots of pligg sites up in different niches, template and design related to that niche, place text links, affiliate banners and other monetise tools onto the site. Then outsource people to find relevate information, articles etc and post it onto your site. Check it now and again to make sure they are working correctly. Plus you only pay them when you get paid. I find this gives them the incentive to work harder and publish good and reliable sources.

For example one of the pligg sites I run is based around celebrities. I outsourced some people and they are the only ones registered to post on the site. Plus when I signed them up I gave them an information pack. This included contracts, information about the site and a website resource list to link content from, such as gossip magazines, gossip blogs, and gossip websites.

I have a pligg site also and mine does very well, I think last I looked the member base was 588, I bought quite a few mods for it and my spams are at very few. its a pr2 and is up for sale ;)

So much gold in so few words. Think about it. Any kind of site. Wiki, article directory, pligg site.....

but in those cases just forget about creating a community...
depends on what you look for using your site....

Well, not allowing people to post destroys the whole concept ( people submitting stuff ).. i've had one pligg site before and within 3 days got spammed so hard i just gave up. But that was like 1 year ago.
There are other websites that are pligg based and are kind successfull ( http://sphinn.com/ is the first that comes to mind ).
How do they do it?

What about drigg, the drupal based pligg? anyone used it ?

Not really. Pligg does really well in the SERPS, like wordpress. It's just another outlet to get traffic.

I guess you gotta ask, do you want to make friends with the site or make money with it. Wordpress started as a platform for Little Ms. Commenter to chime in and tell you how wet she got over your last post and I think we all know what that WP feature leads to.

I don't think is worth it anymore..I'd find a different plan.

You can also try PHP Dug - I have had a couple for a few months now, and there haven't been any real spam problems.

The only thing that sucks with PHP Dug is the lack of templates - unless you want to spend $40 per template...

Try drigg, it's a digg like platform in drupal base. It's something that has much more features compared to pligg. Also, you might want to take a look at socialwebcms. :)
