I went. It's not a waste of time - there were a couple of really good speakers there and, you know, it's free. For me, it felt a bit corporate, like they're targetting the marketing people in mid>large companies who've heard of this SEO thing and think they should probably find out a bit more.

As a result, it was a little frustrating watching these amazing speakers explain basic concepts and then handing over just as they got to the meat of the subject. On the plus side, quite a few of them were out for drinks the night before and it was great talking to some of them. When I say talking, initially it was about SEO but I think it got a bit loud and off-topic at several points...

It's just a shame it was the one night as I'd have been interested in catching up after the Friday session. Of course *shameless plug cough* many of them will be in Vegas at UnGagged in the same hotel for 3 nights, talking to a bunch of hardened SEO'ers so I'm looking forward to picking it back up again there.

I nearly went but hearing words like "don't build links, build quality content and wait for links" makes me feel a little sick. I went to another marketing conference in England though and that hands down changed my life.

When they have speakers like Charlie Floate, I think I would give it a miss.

Found the previous years slides to be a little generic, in saying that if i was in the area i would definitely go.

They probably scrape DP for info and make a hour presentation out of it.

When you take advice off someone who claims to be the God of seo, and claims to only make 20k a month, 19k of which is imaginary. You then know you have no place in SEO.

People who are genuinely good at SEO, you will not find them in places like B SEO. And they are certainly raking in a lot more than 20k a month.

I get what you're saying but I'm not sure I agree. Honestly, some of the people I've spoken to at conferences are genuinely good at SEO and are making loads of money at it. I'd even venture to say that part of the reason they're good is that they're always sniffing out new things, seeing what other people are doing and tweaking to make it fit their m.o.

People assuming they don't need to go to conferences because they know it all and their amazing income is going to last forever tend to be a bit disappointed.

You'll get the odd person recommending their service but that's definitely the exception rather than the rule. For me, talking to the speakers outside the conference, I realised that most of them are genuinely passionate about their subject. Also, giving a session helps network and position them as authoritative (assuming the talk was good of course!).

Honestly, I think it's a lot like this place. Most of the people here are great and will help out wherever they can. Some of the members will go out of their way to help other people with no promises of rewards. But you'll always get a small proportion of idiots who see helpful people as fools and will try to take advantage of them.

It is really not like that at all... I've been to a bunch of them and it is more "industry conversational" than anything.

My intentions when going were to network of course, learn what others were doing, get the heartbeat of some others in the industry and see where trends going.

If you are in a business where you provide something to those that attend, you may get clients from just talking and hanging out with others, I always have, but that is far from the majority's goal and really never was my main focus.

As opposed to a marketing convention, it is more of an association convention, much like you would experience with any industry association that caters to brick and mortars.

I was on the fence about posting it but are you suggesting someone here might find this site very familiar?

    Who knows? Certainly not me.

I prefer to stick with the IGB conferences as they are niche specific. Plus being in the same niche you know who owns what and if they are worth taking notice of. Easy to spot the charlatans like Charlie at the IGB. He was at one in London claiming to be PaddyPowers SEO guy. What a joke that kid is, he soon got laughed out.
