So, I have recently read an article about the controversy regarding domain name picking.
(I have no idea what the site was, but the guy is also a BHW member as far as I can remember)

The article suggested to avoid Partial Match or Exact Match Domains at all cost, since overoptimization can cause troubles when trying to rank. Now, I get the reasoning, because high keyword density will definitely award you a with penalty, but I think if density is kept low like idk 2-4%, lsi kws are used properly and the site has decent content, these domains are still valuable or am I wrong? (Of course only with optimized menu, and no breadcrumbs etc.)

The other penalty may occur when building links. But, if exact/partial match anchors are kept really low, and the other anchor types (such as naked url, generic, lsi etc.) appear at an optimal precentage, the link building and the domain still might work right?

The reason i have doubts is because people often suggest to go with branded, but if you think about it and do some searches you'll quickly see that many times the EMDs and PMDs rank in the front. In addition to that G even highlights the searched keyword part of the url. So, despite the changes in the algorithm they seem to still work fine..

    Opinions?

Exact for micro websites with very few or one keyword which is very easy to rank and doesn't need SEO. PMD for small sites around one master keyword and its longer tails with mediuem SEO effort. Brand for Medium and Big websites with many pages, different sections and keywords and of course needs big SEO campaigns

I haven't thought about it that way but it seems logical. Though almost everything has competition, so I think even micro sites need some SEO. But you're basically saying what I am, that EMDs and PMDs still work.
