Brand Struggling on Instagram

    Hey everyone

    Have read these forums for a long time and gleaned much information from them, but haven't posted until now.

    I run a brand in the import automotive niche. We are a legitimate retail business with warehouse, employees, all that. Our products are on the higher end of things ($2000+) and have significant demand for them.

    Prior to all of the instagram updates I saw great engagement on all of our posts, noticing slightly lower engagement on our "ad" posts where we were selling a product than posts of our customer cars, but not dramatically.

    Lately it seems like engagement has completely dropped off. 92K followers with avg likes of 500-800 on a sales post after 24 hours, and 1000-1500 on customer cars in the same timeframe.
    I maintain a ratio of 2 non sales posts to every 1 sales post, posting 1x/hour 9am-7pm PST with occasional lapses of a couple hours.
    It seems like when I post nothing but customer cars for a 5 or 6 hour stretch and then make a sales post we see higher engagement on that sales post, could this be a possibility?

    My final thought here is that Instagram is likely going the way of Facebook where paid advertising is king. We've developed a marketing strategy for Snapchat and are pushing that direction as it seems Snapchat isn't plagued by ads, but our largest following remains on Instagram and we do need to maintain use of this platform.

    Any general thoughts would be appreciated. Does it seem like we will need to advertise on Instagram to remain relevant on that platform? Is Instagram advertising even worthwhile?
