I was thinking of a few things:

    1. Do 301 to my WH site, hopefully raise my WH PR
    2. Create Links to my WH site
    3. Adsense

The problem is, I can;t find any backlinks to the new domain, nor an older website.

Yet, when I check the PR, it comes back with PR6.

    What do you think?

    1. Why would it be good for you if your whitehat site would have a higher pagerank? Maybe trying to sell ads on there?
    2. Sounds the best idea to me. Maybe you can sell some links to other sites too.
    3. Does it have any traffic?

Chances are its backlinks are gone and your PR will drop on next toolbar update.

    3. Does it have any traffic? ( I don't know, what is a good way to check? )

Chances are its backlinks are gone and your PR will drop on next toolbar update. ( I agree, hopefully I can make something work )

Since then I have a learned a little bit, is use to be a domain of someone that is newsworthy.

Post content on the page and the backlinks will come back automatically.
The best think for first time is, to post a copy of the old content. You will find them on the wayback machine. google for them :)

edit: use this method for expired domains only!

I know what the topic was for the previous owner, thinking of throwing up a bunch of hand written articles.

The Domain was expired, so that maybe why the Links are not showing.

Check its Alexa rank for example.

Yes, deleted backlinks just come back from nowhere...

Why is it so hard to check with ahrefs and seomoz for backlinks before buying a domain name?....

No backlink, will be zero pr on next major update :).
damn easy to farm high pr domain.
you can do this for your pr6 domain
    - build blog with article / plr
    - signup for paid to reviews

    roll of money
