We've got record-breaking heat here lately. I've lost some motivation. But I want to keep working.

Some of you know I used to be a designer and i'm trying to get into the WordPress theme business.

But i've only made one theme so far. And still have a lot to learn.

So I'm building my first "professional-grade" eCommerce theme -- with working shopping cart, and plenty of SEO-optimized features, etc...

So I figured, to keep myself motivated, i'm going to build this theme as a "case study" kind of thread. Hopefully people will toss in helpful commentary and I can use this thread to get opinions and tips and we'll all be able to sit back and watch it evolve into something.

I've already got about 20 hours into this thing. But it's gonna take about 80 more.

The goal is to get this test server page, to look like this VictoriasSecret page.

    Stay tuned.

Ok the next thing i've gotta do is get a splash jpg on the homepage, and get some text displayed on the on the top left.

Let me cite some books that will boost your skills with Wordpress.

    • Digging into WordPress by Chris Coyier & Jeff Starr
    • Building your own Wicked Wordpress Themes by Allan Cole, Raena Jackson Armitage, Brandon R. Jones and Jeffrey Way

If you have not read them already, then you should.

The first one -- Digging into Wordpress -- is going to teach you tips and best practice to put you up and running to develop your own themes, very professional.

And the second one -- Building your own Wicked Wordpress Themes -- is going to teach you, beside, how to create professional themes plus how to and where to sell them.

    Happy reading!

Strongly recommend "Digging into Wordpress" as well!

Also, I don't believe in Themes with heavy built-in SEO. I believe that SEO data should be easily transferrable between themes and belongs as a plugin functionality rather than limiting customers to your own framework.

Outside of learning Wordpress, from a purely design point of view, I encourage moving away from gradients and the horrible Web2.0 look and focusing on clean design with good typography. This is a personal bias, but I find less and less designers are going for that style.

    I gotta checkout those books.

Does anyone know of a video course on wordpress (or even "good web design" in general)? Lynda.com has one kind of.

Ya i like the http://37signals.com/ clean design style. as well as twitters stuff at http://twitter.github.com/bootstrap/

    ok next up

gotta do the math and get the four product pictures cilckable and centered above the picture.

ok the pics are centered now.
I think having the left navigation bar is pretty superflous for this site. So, i'm gonna kill it.

The ReWork book is awesome, I really recommend it to read.

Don't waste your time with video lessons, they are just to give you some intro to the subject, but a raw foundation you'll only get with books, trust me. You may fall into the illusion that tutorials can speed up your learning, but they are just an illusion, really.

After reading "Digging into Wordpress", you won't need nothing more to start creating amazing themes, very good ones able to be sold on Themeforest, trust me.

Don't waste your time and go straight to the point. I've watched many tutorials with the illusion that they'd help me in going faster, but I just wasted my time.

I'm not saying that they are totally useless, everything depends on the tutor, but in general they are very superficial with the subject and are more used to promote the tutor than giving you a solid foundation of the subject.

Lynda has really good ones, but for programming and development I go with ebooks.

Lynda, I like it for things related to Photoshop and design in general. Tutorials for design are good because they are very effective in giving you a clear idea of the interface and visual stuff that with book would be much harder to digest.

That's pretty cool. I really gotta spend more time on Themeforest. they have some awesome stuff.

ok i got the frontpage looking kinda the way i thought it would

    http://carbfreediet.net/

the only thing now is what to do with the cart and the actual articles. will probably just allow the user to select one category of content to feature maybe...

    hmm...

but now, lets get YARPP working on the single.php page so that the user can see other stuff to buy.

The site is coming along very nicely, however Wordpress is garbage for ecommerce. In my opinion of course.

ya a real ecommerce site definitely needs a major cms -- often a custom cms

but this is just an "entry level" theme

    ok update

my left eye is full of puss causing me to take a day off. Might be an infection. but man did it hurt.

Have updated the buttons on http://carbfreediet.net/sdfg/ to merge the price with the pink button.

Ok now comes the hard part. Deciding if i really want to learn http://codex.wordpress.org/Post_Types custom post types.

It's a tough call but on a product theme... probably worth it....
