It is not much beneficial to have a blog anymore. Instead , you can do paid media directly for services listed on website. Maintaining Blog rankings will be time consuming and also be expensive. With same money and efforts, you can get better results with paid media.

I have seen even panels having blog section. They add this to add some credibility for the website. It looks like that the webmaster is serious with the website.
 
If its a website with brand, then the blog section is the place where you explain or provide all the information related to the brand.

This is certainly beneficial for both visitors and SEO. You will often see this section on big websites.

Topical cluster signals are much stronger on a standalone blog a straffic hub. All on one domain is a content mishmash which will decrease your topical relevance signals= website business content, services all that + a blog, that is mishmash....
