Let's say you sell a commercial product, like aluminum bottles.

    You want to blog.

Do you host the blog on your main site? This way, Google gives you credit for fresh, new content as you post.

Or do you blog offsite on blogger.com and link to the main site? This way, as the blog grows in size and pr, you get a juicy inbound link.

When the site you use for selling the bottles is static AND you have unique, related info to share with your visitors make the blog part of your main site.
It will increase the value of your site (in the eyes of Google).

There are so many ways to get links. It would be a waste of your content (if it fits nicely in your main site) to put it on some 3rd party blog.

If it's just for the links you can take optimized spun articles for the off-site blogs. These can rank just as easily with the right promotion as blogs with unique content written by you.
