For a brand new site with no authority, what would be better to start with, 10-20 blog posts from a private blog network or 3-4 guest posts?

I think its about the same, a blog network can be spammed and a guest posting blog as well.. They're both blogs but to be honest your best bet would be a guest post. But do check the site out your wanting to post on, unless you get it done by some one else then they will do it!

I had more luck with quality guest posts :) but blog posts are cheaper and may give better results for the money!

    Good luck

ps. a press release might be a good start as well :)

    Cashcrateaddict,

Personally I would say that having 10-20 posts on your domain would be better because you could target a broader range of keywords. Of course if you are talking about some quality guest posts on your own domain with some good inbound links, that may be powerful as well. I would shoot for quality over quantity.

    Best,

    Shawn

Both would be good, but if you want to rank on Google for long term then go for the guest posts.

I dont know what you mean by "blog post" vs "guest post"
anyway, it doesn't matter. it's all about the quality of the pages that you link appears on. what's the obl? is it spammed to death?
domain authority: was the domain that your link is placed on registered yesterday? or in 1999?
    PR?

I would prefer guest post for long term purpose, (but is there any guarantee on google?) and blog network as it is cheaper but spam to death.

I believe by "blog post" he is referring to someone writing a post and mentioning him/you; in that case, a blog post would be much more powerful than a guest post, for the blog post is a true editorial link whereas the guest post isn't, at least according to Google.

If you can get an editorial link with rich contextual content around it, you are in for a winner. Unfortunately, these links are very hard to get, and often times you have to pay for them e.g. The Huffington Post.

Oh, I just saw he was referring to a private network blog post. If it is your own private network and related to your niche, then definitively go for it.

    Cheers

I suggest you to go for both as long as you are posting in High Pagerank, High Quality Sites with strong authority and hosted in different servers.

I'd go with strictly moderated guest posts. That way, at least not every post on the website will link to an outside domain.

For a new site, I would go with a guest post. If you have the budget, do both! Drip fed of course. And by blog post, I'm guessing you mean a smaller written article compared to a guest post.
