Basically you ping your site when new content is added. It lets the SE bots know to go crawl your site.

Most blogging software has pinging built in. For example, Wordpress has a built-in pinger that will ping its built-in list of ping engines every time you make or edit a post.

You can also manually ping your site to places like pingoat.com and/or pingomatic.com. I normally only use Pingoat, but that is just my preference. Some people use several services, and some people choose to use just one or a few. I use just one because places like Pingoat ping many different services at once, and if you use several services, you might end up pinging the same sites multiple times. I'd rather not risk a ban anywhere, so I just use one.

    thanks alindria.

I use joomla and not a blog, i write reviews and would like to ping them.

    an example here : softmall.org/index.php/Software-Reviews/Games/

so will this work for me or does this only work for blogs?

i have never tried using Joomla before, so I don't know if you can ping it. It's possible you can though. Just try it at http://www.pingoat.com and see what happens.

You can actually ping any website. I ping my straight-up HTML websites all the time as a method of getting into Google quickly. It usually works well. You can just ping without submitting an RSS feed, but I believe Joomla has RSS capabilities, so if you add an RSS news feed, you'll get added into the RSS aggregator directories for some extra traffic.

pingomatic is the fastest and easiest ping service. Ping the URL of any article or review you write. If it has an RSS feed, ping that separately. If the review you write will also appear on your homepage, ping that too.

It lets the search engines know you have updated your site, and your pages will get indexed quicker.

Even though my site gets pinged automatically after being updated, I always prefer to manually get it pinged. Always prefer to do things myself so I know they're done :p

Yes, and a lot of times Wordpress will ping the post, but you should also be pinging your homepage and RSS feed as well

    From my admittedly limited experiments.

If you ping google (hxxp://blogsearch.google.com/ping/RPC2) they will very quickly (within minutes) fetch the page then immediately fetch the first feed listed on the page (the first link rel="alternate" tag). This seems to trigger googlebot to spider the site, which will typically be indexed within a couple of days.

If the page doesn't have a (link rel="alternate" tag) google will fetch the page, not find a feed and NOT trigger googlebot to spider the site.

I believe it's not worth pinging a page unless it has a feed.

It's certainly white-hat as long as you don't ping too often.

If you're using Joomla, DS Syndicate component should be a must have.

    1. It has the ping option but still you need to choose ping option from administartor manually after every new content
    2. It gives a new rss link far better than the standard joomla one which wont even show images

    Regards,
    Carty..
