If you want the best answer, try it yourself. That will clear most of your doubts because you would be speaking from your own experience.

Opinions are like a**holes. Everyone has one and they typically stink.

If you are doing backlinks to sites that G believes are "spam" sites and have been hit with the G stick, then yeah, it probably is almost worthless.

Yes, blog commenting suddenly 100% stopped working on Google's latest update.

So you are best off not doing any blog commenting at-all. That goes for everyone else out there too.

Remember - commenting on blogs = penalty for your website. Never do it!

I sense sarcasm. on a lighter note, I have noticed commenting on blogs to still be effective. It is just taking a wee bit longer to get them indexed for me.

Spot on fella, I'm blog commenting on my competitors sites now and got them all blacklisted on G within 24 hours. Infact I was in position 11 for my keyword and I ran Scrapebox comments on the top 10 sites and got them all banned on Google. Now I'm the top position on Google :D

To be fair my last comment wasn't too helpful.

    Yes, blog commenting still works.

But, as ever, Google is making incremental advances forward in auto-ignoring the lowest value links.

Set your sights on high quality and you will see results.

Blog commenting never works if the comments don't stick.
Blog commenting always works if the comments stick.

Looks like the last google update was strong for filtering spamming comments.
@Micallef: Have you got any penalty after the last google update for doing blog commenting?

    No penalties from comment links.

In the couple of spots where I have lost a few positions, it's mainly due to competitors having superior content and Google finally recognizing this.

I think those of us who are using SB are finding out that it is no longer just "load and blast". Since the recent update, I have not found that to be helpful, and actually borderline harmful.

Blog commenting hasn't lost its value, in fact, it may become more valuable if done right... meaning focusing on finding higher PR sites with lower OBL's. A couple of hundred of those may give better results than what we were getting with 15K crap links.

Google is our friend... they are weeding out the SEO's who are hell bent on quantity over quality. I loved it when it worked, but we have to be flexible enough to change strategies and let Google do the heavy lifting for us!

I actually found that high PR, ********, low OBL blog comments are now having a lot less weight since the update. Are you getting this too? I had a few sites on the first page with only such links and now they are slapped to 3rd page.

To be honest, I normally stabilize my important pages with support networks too, so it's hard to discriminate the effects.

Either way, from where I am standing, it doesn't look like the value of good blog comments has been blown out of the water.

Worth pointing out for any complete nooberts who might stumble across this thread:

Don't just look at the front pages PR, take a second to look at the page rank of where the comments turn up. (common sense is anything but common these days)
