From what I have read, I believe that it will do some good. It would be best if the site is related to your niche for the most link juice. But I will take a link from anywhere as long as it is not por*n or other tab*oo sites that Big G doesn't like.

Yes, I think same niche will give you some good result at Google.

yep, website in the same niche or very related... i.e. bodybuilding (general), related to "female bodybuilding)... also the value of the link is not only from the page that
you've got the link from, it also has to do with the popularity of the home page of the site giving you the backlink.
