I haven't done a money making threads in a while, I've been silly busy.

This one is selling social and SEO marketing.

I was asked for a proposal by a local tanning studio. All was going well until the end of the month, they kept 'forgetting' to pay the invoice. It's business so I sacked them off after they paid etc.

Anyway, fast forward - I'd spoken to a local theatre about allowing their casts/shows whatever to use the salon for free, in return the client gets a mention on their social and websites etc.... they snapped it right up.

However - I now didn't have a salon as a client so I changed tactics as I wanted to keep the theatre on good terms for other projects.

What I did was this - contact every other salon in my area, got them hooked in SEO and marketing, really really easy as all they saw was the links with the theatres.

I decided to expand the idea to local beauticians...worked like a bloody charm!! I'd already got the link with the theatre anyway.

I then thought what the heck. I'll hit my old town which is 60 miles away. However, this time I hit the theatre first. I lied and said I had a beautician and tanning salons on the books looking to do some free seasons, in return for some mentions blah blah - I got the new theatre on side... this time I tracked down the salons after getting the theatre contacts.

I'm now on my forth town using the same tactic... I've made just under £8k in that month because of if, each salon is hooked into a six month, monthly recurring deal.

However, I'm now stopping it as my misses found out and wasn't happy due to it being unethical

Over to you - I say that you got to be able to track down the decision makers at the theatres and production team, if you're scared to pick up the phone, stalk on social media then this will not work... email spam won't cut this one

Sorry how are you making money from this?

You mentioned getting the salons hooked into seo and marketing, but they're also giving away their services for free?

Where's the money coming from and what for?

    It's called marketing

Think giving away reviews for s service - why do they do it?

Congrats, you seem like the guy that gets up his arse and starts working physically for online gains :) I couldn`t do it myself, I`m more of your profile pic marketer, doing all the work from my comfy chair, but kudos to you for making hard work work :)

So they give away their service for a mention on Facebook?

And what do they pay you for?

Maybe it's because I'm in Yorkshire, but if I went into a business and said "hey, I have a great idea - I'll set you up with some people who you can give away your stuff to for free, and in return you pay me" - I'd be out the door with a boot up my arse.

And I come from a sales background - I just don't see where the benefit to them is.

Do they get a lot of business from reviews on theatre social media pages?

Years ago - I had bailiffs knocking on my door... Never again ;)

I'll try nearly anything ha - The only reason I scaled this slightly was because the original salon pissed me off so I thought 'sod ya'

The key, as you will know being a marketer is actually having something to sell, which I did!

However, salons are high maintenance clients

    Yes. When done right

Its nearly free advertising, an investment... Not just social channels but the PR behind it

    PR as in? Local newspapers?

The people I deal with just don't seem to get it. I got a local restaurant I was working for to agree to us designing some flyers and distributing them through local letterboxes, since he'd only just opened and he needed to rely almost exclusively on local clientelle as he's in the middle of nowhere, well, not in a town center so people have to plan to go there, there's no walk past business.

So it was "get a free bottle of wine with your meal with this voucher" - idea to get people through the doors so he could wow them with his food. (bottle of wine cost him about £4). They were asked to provide email addresses/join mailing list or provide phone numbers, etc, which most happily did.

He got a response of about 50 - 60 bookings (usually 2 people per booking) from 1000 flyers - but couldn't see the value so instead of following it up, getting them to book for a couple of weeks later, emailing them, etc - he decided it wasn't worth the outlay or effort and did nothing.

He's gone bust now mind you, but the people I seem to end up talking to are so non-committed - they want to sit and wait for people to come to them, they are very cagey about spending money on marketing.

    Maybe it's a Yorkshire thing.

Restaurants are the worst customers ever...

I have a local Facebookpage with +100K real fans.

Try to convince one to advertise for a small fee :)

Only work with people who 'do get it'

Get them results, they talk for you and about you

And then there is the cast study behind it ;)

Okay so I've just recently discovered online marketing and such so can someone like myself do your method without prior experience.

    Depends, to be honest.

I have a backlog of clients that I can show a potential new client statsitics etc - for a 'noob business' thats way harder to back up your claims that you get results, and be able to prove it.

How good are you on the phone?

edit - you're new to marketing? I wouldn't bother until you know what you're doing to be honest. You'll get eaten alive if you can't provide what you're selling
