This post is around the Google ADword's keyword tool and I discuss some of hte biggest mistakes people while using it to research new niches or keyword.
This is very important for most of you so make sure you study it properly, negligence could kill you income at the first place itself.

    Mistake #1: Not logging in!
You need to be logged in to get accurate results, or so it seems. On many occasions I have found the results of the keyword research different from the results when I was logged in.

Mistake #2: Using Default Match Type.
This is bigger mistake than the previous one, it will keep you in an illusion of the amount of traffic you will get after ranking. Yep, way down in the lower left of the page there are three checkboxes, hidden away as if to intentionally lead you to believe your market is larger than it appears.

You don?t want broad match?you want exact match. If you are searching for the term ?dog bites,? a broad match will match on any of the following:

    • dog bites man
    • man bites dog
    • someone with a hot dog bites into it
In other words, this returns way more results than you?re looking for. So uncheck broad and check exact.

    Mistake #3: Global Searches.
Make sure you are targeting the audience from the right country.

But in some cases you might want to rank worldwide. But still this will give you wrong results.... how?
Lets see this, google has many properties, google.co.in fro my country... google.co.uk and many others. It almost impossible to rank in all these properties. So the market/traffic size will be less even if you rank #1 than the estimated global searches.

    Mistake #4: Local Searches.
After realizing all this, you think: ok, mysite would get XXX/month now.
No it will not. Why? Because you cannot get 100% of the traffic from all searches. In my experience, I would say it is around 40-60%.

    Thank You For Reading.

quoating your point No #3 - I guess the new keyword tool gives results ( search results ) only form the search and not from other properties. This is why the search volume decreased after the G introduction to new tool. This is also discussed in many blogs.

    Mistake #5: Search count!
You need to check the exact search count for entire year not just for a month. There are some keywords where the search volume would be very high for a particular month and very low for the rest of the month. For example, let us take the keyword "sundress". The search volume would be high during summer season and the search count dip to dirty low during other seasons. You should be very careful with that. While choosing niche/keyword you have to make sure that there are demand for the same throughout the year.

Good tips. Also, you should note that even if you get on 1st page of Google, the traffic varies considerably depending on your position. From my experience, traffic at 5th position is about 40% of what you'd get at 1st position.

I think you got me wrong here, I meant search engines only. But the data is different for different countries. So if you think you can get 60% of global searches by ranking no.1, then its not going to happen coz its near impossible to rank #1 in each and every countries SERPs.... :)
