Google says meta description can be in the length of approximately 160 characters, because by that the Google can crawl the description easily.

But i saw a web site having 230 words and its shown as such as in the Search Engine Result Page(SERP)...

How come this is possible, can any one here clear my doubt....

The image gives below will give you a clear vision about this doubt

maybe they use some kind of rich snippet or maybe google just pulls up more bits and pieces from their description to match your keywords? does the same snippet appear when you see this page for different queries?

Google scans the whole text on your page.

If google see relevant words and phrases on the content, it might show on meta description.

Look at the screenshot.. you see 3 dots like this "..." it means that google skipped those content because it is not relevant to the search query of the user.

I have tried with various keywords to this URL but all other results shown, had only 160 characters as their meta description in the search result. Where as, only for this keyword its showing 230 words as meta description???

The point is that when pages provide simple answers for one's query, Google shows longer snippets for search results.

The search engine previously http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2007/10/knowledge-discovery-using-googles-info.html that allowed increasing the size of the snippets and highlighting extracted facts like dates, locations, etc.. But the sidebar didn't get popular with users.

That's why Google decided to http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2009/01/longer-google-snippets.html if there's a high density of information related to one's query.

That's the main reason why you can find some descriptions that are more than 160 characters.

Hope you find this info useful.

    :)
