    Hi.

I found a good keyword on Googles Keyword tool.
I am now ranked positions 1-5 for it - However the traffic isnt even worth talking about!

The Keyword has over 200,000 Searchs on EXACT MATCH on the Keyword tool...

I have been in positions 1-5 now for about 5 days...
Only got about 50 visitors in TOTAL.

    Whats the deal?

Check webmaster tools to be sure your average position nation wide is actually in top 5.

Also, if you have personalization running, which you almost certainly do unless you have turned off and deleted web history from your Google account, your rank will appear very good, when in fact, it is very bad. Google shows you what you want to see. Signing out is not sufficient, because the history access is stored in your cookies. You have to disable and delete it, and you have to turn off your machine and reboot to get rid of the cookie (or delete your cookies).

turn off web history in your google account to get a true ranking. or use a tool like rank checker (available here on BHW) or rank checker addon for firefox.

Youre probably just tricked by google. If you are logged in on your google user and also use google webmaster for you domain your site will almost always be in the top 1-5 for you keyword when you search.

Clear cookies and check with some proxies.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but everyone is assuming here that the G keyword tool is giving accurate numbers. Of course, I can't prove anything, but I think there are plenty of instances where the tool throws out ridiculously high numbers for a niche. Just my two cents...

Web history is the funniest thing that ever happened to me when I first started SEO about 2 years ago. I was so excited until I learned that it was just stupid Google's suggested search kicking in.

I think one of the things that people overlook in terms of the search volumes reported by G's keyword tool is the fact that the GLOBAL traffic means traffic from every single countries google page.

You would be suprised how much your ranking will fluctuate between countries. You might be number 2 or 3 in US search, but for other countries you might not even be in the top 10 and evaluating which countries get what % of the search traffic is pretty much impossible.

I would also see where you rank for Google UK/US/CA etc. These all add up for global searches, so make sure you're 1-5 for them too :)

200k exact searches is a ton you should definitely be getting some nice traffic, did you cross check it with wordtracker? If not I would do that as well as any other keyword tools where you can get search totals to make sure.

change the region in google, take note of the local traffic number, move to next region. You can break out an entire kw this way if you were motivated enough. a simple ubot can give you a spreadsheet to make a nice pie chart from..

Thats actually true. I often rank higher for certain terms in google.co.uk but my site goes off the tangent on google.com...so these things do matter!

Yeh I guess this would work to be fair, if someone created a bot to automate it you could get some much more accurate traffic analysis.
