Big problem!!! I use my laptop alot, and always have it set for no screensaver. I went out of town and forgot to shut it down. I came back, laptop is still on and the screen is dark! I can barely see anything now!

All my projects are on there... How do I get them back? Is there a way I can transfer the hard drive to another computer or something?

    Help   :(

This may sound simple but did you reboot the laptop? Do a total shut down, meaning press the power button for 5 seconds then start it back up.

What trouble shooting have you done so far?

You can take out the harddrive and transfer its contents to a normal hdd with an adapter. A computer shop will help you. Something like this:

Also many laptops can use an external monitor as well so you can use one to burn your data on DVDs.

This may sound like a stupid suggestion, but have you tried adjusting the brighness.
Also have you tried rebooting your computer.
If that doesn't work, check to see if there is a vga port on your laptop, quite a lot of them have it. If yours does then hook up your desktop monitor to your laptop. You might have to use look up how to get your laptop to display on the external vga, normally its a key combination.

Plug HDMI cable from laptop into TV, then back up all files or do whatever you want (TV won't have a problem displaying it)

I tried brightness... not working. My screen is completely shot. I'll try hooking it up to my desktop monitor.

Your harddrive should be fine so don't worry about the data in your laptop because it's there, I suggest you take it to your nearest computer repair to get it checked, I would never get my hand into a laptop coz there just to fucking fragile.

You sure it never just went into powersaving mode.
I leave mine on for days with no screensaver without a problem.
Screensavers were made for old crt monitors and have no use anymore
except for hiding the shit you were doing while not there.
Unless you have a plazma screen where a still image will burn into the screen
    it shouldn't be an issue.

i'm positive. When I look really really close at the screen it's really really dim. I turned the contrast up to max, but the screen was on so long, the lights i guess just got weak and dimmed down

it just may not be a problem with your LCD.. can be even with you FL inverter.. Try the preboot diagnostics..

If its dell its gotta have PSA and you can check that..

Not necessarily, there are many other causes for this type problem.

His best bet is to google the problem: "dark screen" and also include brand and maybe model in search. This kind of problem can have different causes, depending on brand and model.

For example: I believe it was Toshiba. This brand laptop, according to some discussions, has this problem often. Some users found that it was caused by defective sensor/switch that detects when screen is open or closed. Some users found do-it-yourself solutions. Another found pinched wiring around area where screen hinges. etc. Some said their model had a wheel-like adjustment on the side to return screen brightness, others said software download from microsoft did the trick.

So the problem and solution varies from brand to brand and model.

Is it still under warranty? Have you gone to the mfgrs website to see if they have answers in the troubleshooting FAQ's Good luck

    Hi,
It sounds like your back light is on the blink, for whatever reason.
    This is what I'd recommend:
Hook up your laptop to your desktop monitor, or tv.
Then backup all your docs, programs, bookmarks from your laptop to your desktop
If you have a network cable, this will be faster, if you are using wireless it will be slower.

Once you have backed up your data:
If your laptop is still under warranty, remove anything you don't want found by anybody else before sending back for repair.

    If out of warranty:
Search for problems with your laptop and screen, Try something like "dell latitude 123abc" dim screen in google. Obviously using your model for the laptop.
You can sometimes get replacement backlight with instructions on how to replace, but you need to make sure this is the problem first.

Replacing the screen or backlight shouldn't be very difficult, sometimes you can find youtube videos that show you how to do this.

    Best of luck
