Your domain is either indexed or deindexed, there is no such thing as "the homepage is deindexed".

I still cannot believe people are getting deindexed for 'unnatural' links. It would be so easy to mess with a competitor if someone really wanted to.

how "unnatural" are your links? I mean, many of us received the mesage but didn't get deindexed or something.

@op : What if you type this in google :

    site:yourdomain.com

What do you have as results ?

I really hope that what you said isn't true, "getting penalized for links" otherwise google will be turned into a Battle Field...

What happens is there are still results of the inner pages but the homepage are nowhere to be seen. we supposed to be ranking #1 in the most competitive keyword and now we're gone.

When your site has content that is copyright, the real owner or whatever can send DMCA notice to google and then google will go deindex that page.

yup DMCS can remove one page and still the whole site can work. But never seen search engine to remove one page because of penalty. It's always the whole domain.

Do one thing - search google for your keyword and then check for any DMCA notice below the results. you can check the reported url i suppose.

Like Jamesvick said ^ search for your keywords on your homepage that were ranked. Check each result pages on google until you see the below notice from google at the bottom, then click on the link on that notice to see if someone has file a complaint on your page/pages.

"In response to a complaint we received under the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act, we have removed 1 result(s) from this page. If you wish, you may read the DMCA complaint that caused the removal(s) at ChillingEffects.org."
