we are marketers here, so if somebody don't follow you back in a given time frame, it's more likely it will never follow you back (or that person is not active enough to worth to keep one slot amongst your following), hence there's no need to follow that person furthermore
on the other hand, there's also a following limit on twitter (2000, then your followers plus 10%)
and it doesn't look too good either, if you have 50 followers and 1500 followings (and not so many of those 1500 would like to follow you back), so you need to unfollow from time to time to keep the ball rollin, it's just as important as the following part
