www.domain.com/subdomain will be indexed better if I understand you correctly. Sub domains are basically treated as their own entity so authority may not pass as well as using the /directory approach.

I think some of that info may already be out of date. I don't think that you can still monopolize the serps with sub domains.

They are 2 different things, they carry different weight, and they perform 2 different functions. If you want to have a sub-site from your main site, then go sub-domain. If is just an addition of your original site go with sub-folder.

This is interesting. Anyone has data on what is better and why? Even though I agree with evilclown, would be nice to learn more about it.

Ok, there is no A is better than B. Let say for example that you have a site that covers a market and this market can split into states. Then sub-domain would be better as each sub-domain could rank differently on each market.

Now let's say you your site covers a line of products, witch have different products in each line. Let's use make up. It have different brands and many different child products. The sub-folders would be better as it would contain the information to the main site. Now sub-folders at a point stops giving value. The deeper you go in, the worst. If you need content/content/content/content/content then for sure this a potential section for a sub-domain.
