I am looking for a database plugin to use within WordPress, for the purpose of building a "yellow pages" type site, but with the benifits of Wordpress for ease of use and SEO. A search for "wordpress database" matches many other things that are specific to the WordPress database. I would also need adsense everywhere and possibly the ability for members to post (maybe for a fee eventually)...
    Anybody have any ideas?
So far all I have found is something by WPMU (by searching "Wordpress directory plugin") and it looks 100% like a blog, but better than anything else I have found (not much)...
I have found NOTHING like yellowpages style sites.

I did a crawl for the same thing last year, couldnt find anything suitable for wordpress. A directory site is a huge amount of coding and not entirely suitable for wp. I ended up using a nulled copy of e-directory but that was a waste of six weeks of my life. Unless something is recent to the Market I think you will struggle but good luck

I actually did find one that I like well enough for what I need it to do.
It's the woothemes listings template. I have been working with it a couple of days and so far, my listings look the best out of any site I have seen (in large thanks to the theme). My SEO skills are pretty rock solid, so I think I should be ok as far as profit.

Try this one. It's free (forget about the "massage therapy" at the end): http://freebusinessthemes.com/yellow-pages-theme-for-wordpress/?themedemo=Massage_Therapy_Theme
This one probably looks the closest to the real thing, thought it retails at $35, but there's a guy on Fiverr can get just about theme on ThemeForest for $5. They're not always nulled though, and some require a license code, but it's worth a shot for only $5. http://themeforest.net/item/sofa-opnpress-publishing-platform/146753?ref=neojit

I saw a script advertised about a year ago that will scrape the online YP and get you all of the data to start your own local directory. Don't remember the name but you could Google it and find it probably pretty easily. Good luck!

I had a look. That is about up my ally, butI think it's a bit too big for good SEO. It looks like they are actually trying to take on Google Places. I want to target just one niche.

So far, this is about the best one as far as creating a true fully functional directory: http://directorypress.net/ - It's by PremiumPress.
But even that one has a real "detached" feeling to it. Like there is nothing special about the listings themselves. They are very simple. No maps, no ratings. Nothing special. I don't need such a huge database as mine will be highly targeted and therefor, consisting of only a few categories (other than location based).
I think I have with the Woo themes listings theme, I have struck a good balance. It is a "data-base", but the listings themselves can be so much more, with links, ads, forms, maps... all that. As for me, I think I am set.
Still open to suggestions and feel free to keep it going for anyone else who may be looking for something of this nature.

There used to be someone in the BST section that sold a plugin for this. They had a bunch of DBs ready to go that would connect and populate your site with the info. For SEO you can modify the theme yourself and add PHP calls to create more SEO content. There are many free plugins that will add things like maps, ads, ratings, etc.
