Hi all, i am starting a new web design business in my city (yes another one:cool:.) But i was thinking of building a local directory with free listings to attract local businesses and then offer them website design, social media management, leaflet design, business card design, blog posting, local seo and everything available.

Has anyone else tried this method and had much success?

DonĀ“t offer only free listing...that make look your directory "cheap" offer free and premium listing. Use different names for your Internet Agency and directory...let it look like two different companies.
Get a database of all/most companies in your city and add it to your directory..
Pick those from which you think they will be ready to buy premium listing..
send to them a well designed sales letter with a special offer like "Buy a premium listing for 12 months and get 30% off for all the services from our sponsor.(sponsor=your internet agency)
Now follow that and you will make good money..

I used this approach a few years ago when Local SEO came out...

This is a great way to break the ice. I would estimate that every business owners receives at least 10 marketing calls a day.

I found it is hard to extract information out of people when you come at them with a strong selling tactic like Buy! Buy! Buy! So we created various niche directories and added the potential lead information as a "Free Listing". We would then directly contact the business owners explaining how our directory was going to help them; along with how much it would benefit them to upgrade to a "Featured Listing" (we would offer a low price and even signed enough people up with the ehanced listings to generate a nice residual side revenue).

Once we broke the ice with the directory the business owners were more open to hearing our sales pitch for more services.

    Good luck!

Hey thanks for your very helpful comments. I am thinking of having the directory within my web design service in my town? Does this seem like a good or bad idea? I was only going to make 1 button visible on my web design site, but the directory would get random promotion on our social networks to draw people in........ how does this sound?
