I have a pretty good grasp on technology and marketing as a whole but I know very little about internet marketing. I've had a fun couple of days exploring Black Hat and this whole new world!

I'm NOT looking to "get rich quick" which is why I want to take my time and learn a little bit more by getting my feet wet.

Where is the easiest (best) place to start with internet marketing so I can eventually build up my confidence and experience in this world?

    Your help is totally appreciated.

    Thanks Black Hat Friends!

    -Andrew

Here are some things for you to shoot through if you want to gain a bit of knowledge/experience:

    - Learn how to do keyword research.
    - Once you've picked a keyword, buy a domain and learn how to set up a wordpress site
    - Use the Yoast plugin, read about which settings are recommended
    - Learn about on-page SEO and set your site up accordingly
    - Create a facebook, twitter and google+ profile under a persona for the site
    - Learn how to get followers on these and how to get traffic from them
    - Start building backlinks and monitor how you're doing for your keywords, try a few blackhat ones, try getting a few whitehat ones
    - Learn what these are and how people create them: web 2.0s, blog comments, profiles, wikis
    - Learn how these should be used, do not build blog comments, profiles or wikis directly to your money site in any large volume
    - Learn about spun versus unique content
    - Learn what these do: xrumer, senukex, scrapebox, zennoposter (I'm not recommending you use them, but you'll see links from them constantly being discussed)
    - Learn what a VPS and what proxies are
    - Learn about unique c-class ip addresses

Jump in and build something, you will be taking action, you will start learning from your mistakes, and you might even luck out and kill it in your first try.

I'm a community manager for an audio technology company. I have experience with blogging, social media and a little bit of SEM and SEO.

This plan NEVER fails. Period, if you can't figure this out (which some people can't, they should leave IM)... It's easy.

    Buy hosting.
Buy domain, try to find an aged one.
    Install Wordpress.
Make a custom theme or use a pre-made theme, custom is better.
Optimize your on-page with Yoast SEO plug-in, set it up.
    Change your permalink structure.
Find keywords you want to target and go after them, start small.
Start by reviewing products on Amazon.
Start writing original content articles about 200-800+ words.
Add images + alt tags to each post, + meta/title tags, etc.
Sign up for Amazon affiliate program.
    Add affiliate link in post.
Sign up for Google Adsense and add banners ads to website.
Keep adding new content, create new accounts and link it with facebook, g+, and twitter.

At this point if you aren't getting at least 500+ visitors a month or making $20/month.. If not you should quit IM.
Seriously, I've done this a bunch of times, have never failed at this..
One recently I just did, is a 5 year old site (0 backlinks) 20 day process building site (prev nothing on it) + content, just got $85+ in Amazon last night + $50+ adsense this month. ZERO link building. Now the real fun comes in, you know that you need to scale it and built at it, then you start link building..

    If you are...

Let's start doing SEO and link building on the site.. (This would take me an hour to cover so I won't).
Now, SCALE IT. Keep going bigger.

That's been my process, and it's work incredibly well for me. I don't rush into this, I don't make cheap sites, I make sites with the intention of making $ in the long term..

+ Read every thread on BHW as much as possible, some of the best ways to learn IM are from people on BHW talking about it.. It's partly how I learned, and I still am to this day..

Regardless of which direction you choose, you should ALWAYS choose something that interests you.

I started some initial projects that involved sites centered around crap like Forex, martini glasses, polycarbonate roofing sheets, etc. See where I'm going with this? Those sites just sit there now and I have no interest in even viewing them. Heck, it's a pain in the backside just going in and updating the plugins and whatnot.

Now, I'm pursuing a passion site or two, some kindle writing, as well as some list building techniques, but this is stuff I had no idea existed a few years ago.

Over the past year and a half I've grown a community of 60k audio creators through creating a CPA where affiliates get paid based on signups for our SAAS (however there are only 10 blogs engaged in this). Also have garnered 300+ posts regarding our company and I run successful social media contests and strategy weekly.

Can't go wrong with a MNS in a non competitive niche that you're fairly knowledgeable about. If your site generates interest, there are lots of ways to monetize. This is usually a good way to start paving the way for bigger projects.
