I have a few sites that target really competitive keywords. I want to start targeting some long tail ones also since the tough ones are going to take a long time to begin seeing any real traffic.

Is there a tool that can generate long tails and pick out the best?

Here is how I do it:

I scrape all the keywords in a niche using my favourite keyword tools (mainly Adwords tool, Wordtracker, Wordstream).

Then I divide those lists up into the top 20% by traffic and the bottom 80% (the 80/20 rule). The top 20% I count as "short tails" and I make a lot of pages targetting these keywords and pump a lot of backlinks to them. Every site I build in that niche will target a lot of those top 20% keywords, eg. around 50% of the pages will target the top 20% keywords. The bottom 80% is less intensively promoted.

You could get into trying to select the "best" long tails based on CPC, competition etc. but that to me is a bit of a waste of time. The idea with long tails is that you target a LOT of them and make money in volume rather than cherry picking "good" keywords like you might with shorter tails. You're not too worried about ranking for any particular long tail - you just want to whack up a whole bunch of pages, and eventually at least some of them are going to give you traffic.

adwords tool is all you need. The others are all based off of that. Don't need no damn tools. Open it up, slap some keyword in there and look for something that interests you. Pick the ones you like and run some through traffic travis competition module and see how powerfull their backlinks are.

If you think you can get more links and their site isn't optimized, go for it.

Seriously takes a few minutes and all free.
