    Hi,

I'm doing some promotion for a friend who does web design for commission, and I have managed to compile a list of over 20k small business email addresses that have outdated websites, and might be looking for an upgrade.

I'm having some trouble getting my head around the specifics of emailing though, would emailing the whole 20k list be regarded as spam? I don't want to do anything massively illegal.

Another issue I suspect I will run into is my email being blocked by spam filters. I was going to use a gmail account and a mailmerge script to send out the emails. Should I blast them all at once or send out 500 a day? 50 a day?

Is there any better way to send emails for free / cheap apart from gmail?

Any advice you may have on this subject is appreciated, I can't seem to find much information on it anywhere else.

Email won't get you results... well it will, but marginal results.

If I were you I'd be phoning them, nothing works better than direct human contact.

true, though it's easier to gather 20k email than 20k phone numbers and it would also take a long time to phone them all :)

I did exactly the same thing, but alot of the emails bounced back (used custom email through gmail).

Don't send more than 100 emails from one gmail account from what I have read. Atleast that's how I got banned (was sending 150-200 emails a day).

If the list was smaller I would say use mailchimp but for larger lists get a copy of "Mail List Controller" you can probably find the old ultimate version online somewhere. Then set it up on a VPS or your desktop if your ISP doesn't block your ports.
