In my experience, google Adwords competition is misleading---
-I use it to find "exact" number of matches

but as far as actual competition, traffic Travis seems best - it bases sites on pr and # of backlinks on the page and the site overall (and checking out the actual top 10 result competition, it feels more accurate than say googles arbitrary "low/medium/high")

what do you guys think/ what do you guys use?

The Adwords "competition" metric is often interpreted as SEO competition when it in fact deals with advertiser competition (ie how many Adwords advertisers are bidding for that keyword). These are two completely different things, and the metric does not have anything to do with how hard it will be to rank a keyword.

As far as analysis, I like SECockpit (it's like $99/mo though), but Market Samurai or Traffic Travis do the job too and are cheaper.

At the end of the day though for keyword competition analysis you will have to look at the backlink profile and make a determination on your own. Don't just blindly rely on a tool to spit out difficulty ratings, you need to investigate the page 1 competition thoroughly to see if you have a chance at cracking it.

Looking at the number of results for any keyword is pointless. And Market Samurai is totally useless, as it pulls data from Bing nowadays.

    I've always been a fan of http://serpiq.com

Great program but it's no longer free.

Normally though you should be able to check the competition on your own.

Once you get used to it there's honestly not very many things to look at age, PR, link profile, on site optimization, authority and so on

Long Tail Keyword does a pretty good job fo giving you the keyword competition and it is fairly inexpensive. The Platinum version, which is the version that gives you this info is only $17 mo and the $24 intitially for the pro version.

I bought it and it will give you a score for the competition.

    0-20 very low competition
    20-30 low competition
    30-40 medium comp
    40-50 high comp
    50+ Very high competition

Go with the 20-30 range and you should be able to rank with good content. I am working on a few 24's (score) and I am moving up the rankings fairly quick, with little content.
