What is the best way to collect emails at a convention?

I'm attending a convention in Las Vegas in a few months. My goal is to get as many email addresses as possible from each person who stops or passes by our booth. This type of convention is more 'urban' ... (low rider convention) and our booth is for a music group who is performing live there.

At CES the other month, people were just dropping business cards into fish bowls. But these people won't have business cards ;)

So obviously a clip board where people hand write their email address, its going to be too hard to read & people are not too receptive to putting their email on a clip board list...

As an incentive to give up their email, we will be offering a free CD (or something similar along those lines). So i'm thinking about using an iPad or something similar for each person to use to enter their email. A regular laptop may do the trick, but like the clip board it may turn people off.

Something like an iPad will make 'everybody' want to put in their email... in exchange for the group's CD.... and they get to touch the iPad while they put in their email...

    What a deal huh?

    So wwbhwd?

PS: Bonus CD: How you can make money online lol..

I would think that keeping it quick and simple with the clip board will work well. Your guys will have to sell the people at the convention that they really need to sign up because people will be reluctant.

Maybe try and tell them they will be entered in a drawing to win a signed guitar or some such. It doesn't have be expensive... and If you can get a few hundred emails a $100 cheap replica guitar from ioffer signed will be nothing. And then go from there

Like the ipad idea if you are dead set on not giving anything away, I think you're right about the novelty.

Giving away something $50-100 is also a great idea. You could also blackhat it and just never give anything away.

Make sure to make it easy for several people to be writing at once. You don't want to have one guy with a clipboard trying to take 10 people's e-mails -- because 8 will walk away

Have a raffle. professional looking cards for them to fill out with name, email, phone and then they slide them into a big raffle barrel thing. Also have multiple pens on hand so multiple people can enter at the same time. Print on the card in big letters that if they don't enter their full details including their email then they're not eligible to win.

You have to incentivise - most people won't give up their contact details just for a free CD from some band they've never heard of.

Make the competition for a couple of bottles of nice booze, liquor store vouchers etc drawn on the last day of the convention, right before the after party. That will surely get a few signups at a low rider convention. :)

Offer to exchange business cards first. You're going to get a lot of emails off of the business cards. Then direct them to sign up for a free giveaway. This way you double your odds. Plus if you give them one of your cards first they will be obligated to reciprocate.

I would do a raffle, that always works. Then just have a ipad/laptop/etc to take down the name and email.
