    Hi there,

Please can someone tell me what (preferably free) tools are available for copying a WP install and installing it on seperate subdomains?

    Cheers,

    Adam

FTP download the site then download the database using phpMyAdmin.

Reverse the process each time you set up a new blog.

Should work. You may have to manually tweak the db so it's config is set to the proper domain/subdomain though. Otherwise the rewrites and redirects will all be wrong.

Are you trying to clone your Blog or just make a new blog with all the functionality of your other one? If you are trying to clone everyting, then do what the guys above said. If you are just trying to have the same plugins and what not, just copy all your plugins and stuff to labelled folders on your desktop. Then just FTP them to the appropriate folders in your subdomain.

Another thing you can do is to just install WP-Hive (available at wordpress). This plugin or app mimics Wordpress MU sort of. It allows you to have multiple installs, from one install. So you only have to install wordpress and your chosen plugins once.

Thanks for the wp-hive tip... I'm working on this same problem.

I've been working with a programmer friend of mine, and have created a perl script that will clone a live wordpress install, which we'll call the template install. (Note: this is for cloning your own installs, not sites on the web - so you have to have admin access....)

From the template install you give the script a instruction file that includes:

Source Template Install Directory, New Blog name, new blog target directory, new blog URL, new blog table name.

The instruction file can have as many entries as you'd like, as the script is meant to install 50-100 blogs at a time.

My goal with this is to have several template installs at all times. One for autoblogs, one for review sites, one for regular blogs... and so on. Each template will be totally configured with settings, seo settings, themes and plugins, so that all I have to do is run the script, add content and a tracking code, do a minimum of customization, and it is off and running...

We've got the script working to install and rename new sites from the templates, but we're still tracking down some bugs or problems that have something to do with file permissions, the database, or perhaps wp sec keys...

If you're interested, I'll keep you posted.
