Best Way To Check Your Competition Strength And Keyword Research

For me the best is to use Market samurai to analyze the on page optimization,then use use seo quake and Seo Spyglass to analyze the backlinks.

I work like this: If my competitor has 10 pr4,5 pr 2 30 pr 1 10 pr 0,then i will need at least this for compete in this market.

This is not a exact science,but this is what works at least for me.


Search with "" dont say to you the level of your competition,but if you have a list of 1000 keywords,is better to begin to analize the ones with a low level of competing pages but what matter is the Backlinks and not the number of pages competing for a term.

You can have a term with 10.000 competition pages buth with a high backlink competition,and you can have a term with 100.000 competition pages but pages with low backlinks


But the most important for analyze competition,is to have a solid backlink plan that works..If you dont have a good source of backlinks you cant compete with anyone,but if you are a Backlink pro,then you can enter in high competition markets..

If you are begining,just start with low niches like 5k/10k searches,when you can get the top positions go to more harder markets....

Some programs like MNF do that for you but I don't always trust these programs to give me accurate results.

I'm not sure what you mean by long term or short term.

These are search strings:

inurl:keyword < ??? - Shows how many people have optimized their permalink with the keywords.
inanchor:keyword < ??? - Shows how many anchor text link keywords are out there.
intitle:keyword <??? - Shows how many people have optimized their title with the keywords.

If you want long chain keywords just put "" around the search term: "inurl:my keywords I want to rank for"

The more results that show up the higher the competition. I can't give you an exact number of what to target because it can vary from niche to niche.

If you see that there's only say 500 showing for the intitle search you know that competition is really weak. You have to play around with different keywords to really understand the competition.

Install SEO Quake for Mozzila Firefox.

Type in the keyword you want to rank for in Google, then see what Page Rank (PR), Links to page (L), and Links to Domain (LD) are there for the top 20 sites.

LD determines Authority, so if you see wikipedia which has 1 million + then that means you are competing with one authority website.

L determines specific competition, so if you see a site with (L) of 2k+ then you need to work your site with onpage seo and build quite a few backlinks to compete with the competitor.

PR determines Page Rank of the competing sites, so stay away if you see a bunch of them (six or more sites on the first page) being Page Rank 4+

On top of all that, you want to type allintitle:your keyword to see how many sites are competing.

This is pretty much all I do.

It depends if they have the keyword in their domain.

Ex. If #2 position has Keyword.com or SomethingKeyword.com then that shows you that it's a good idea to have the keyword in your domain, since you would only need 585 backlinks to be 2nd position, etc.

Don't judge it on first 2 positions, look at top 20.
