I live in a big house, almost 5000 sq ft. My desktop, cable modem and router are in the upstairs office at the very front left corner of the house.
If I am downstairs at the kitchen table in the far right, back corner of the house, my wireless is fine but if I go right outside that table and on the patio, my connection is spotty at best.

What's the best way to boost my signal without bringing my desktop and router into a closer area of the house? I don't want to fuck with an aircard either.

I would just buy another modem and router and place them in a different area of your house. You'll have an option of which signal to grab then.

I had to look up Faraday cage... @M.A.D., what in the world are you doing with
that information rolling around in your head?

Quick and dirty trick is to take a coffee can, remove bottom with a canopener. Tin snips to cut it in half, stand it up behind the router antenna to strengthen the signal in a specific direction.

I found a template for the perfect parabolic bend online, but I can't post links yet or I'd look for it for you.

The whole tinfoil parabola thing really does work... best is to make 2 holes in it (aligned vertically) and put the antenna through, so that the tinfoil is right behind the antenna... now you can rotate it to strengthen the signal in which ever direction you want :D

You can buy directional antennas that can get a couple of miles in one direction as long as there is not any trees or building blocking it. If you are just looking to fill a big house w/ wifi or get good signal in your backyard, get a signal booster that you plug into a wall jack in another part of the house and it just amplifies the signal it receives.

I shit you not the video 2 posts above me works lol.

I did the same thing. I put some foil shit around my router and it boosted my signal 2x.

Keep in mind that it only does it in one direction.
