Upwork was my first thought. I posted a job and unfortunately every applicant spoke very poor English (which is not what I want given I'm trying to hire... ya know... writers lol)

My ideal candidate is more than just a writer... they will have to perform a few other tasks so I'm leaning more towards hiring a "VA" instead of just writers.

Where have you guys had the most luck in finding suitable VA's that speak decent English?

Upwork is still the best I know, all you need to do is make your job post not visible and browse freelancers that meets yiur criteria and invite them to make an offer or you can as well do that straight away.

Another way I think you can get highly qualified writers is to use strict filters on your job Ad, that way your are guaranteed that only those who meet the criterias set in the filters will see your job Ad.

I had this problem at first, took down 2 job ads, set up one not visible to anyone and invited writers I deemed capable of producing high quality content that suits my requirements, have 2 now, an American and a British who currently are working for me. But, I had to work with them in terms of training to get my desired content angles and format; and I do some corrections myself if not all because I still like to twerk some things after they are done and not stop them from working on the new batch/mileage as it's called on Upwork.

Most importantly, it's all about budget and tactics because most writers would want a huge or big project to be interested cos quite a lot of them do have a ample of free time or idle time, when they have no clients they are working for. Just like every business, there's always a downtime, so it's taking advantage of such situations, ya know.

If you're looking for a VA - look for Filipino workers. Most good VA's I've worked with are from the Philippines

Upwork is fine, it just takes some time to get a good person. Make sure your rates are good enough and also try to negotiate a under the table deal to avoid the upwork fee
