Anybody have any thoughts on a really good comprehensive tracking script I can install on my server as I don't want to use G analytics.

I have used MINT before and liked its reporting but I'm sure there is a better option these days.

    TIA

    Ah Piwik looks good thanks.

Why not? I've never liked using tools outside of my immediate control and tbh I'm not convinced there aren't ulterior motives we know nothing about yet ;)

    Piwik.

As for why not using GA, it allows them to do indepth analysis of your viewers. It's possible they use on-site time, funnels, heatmaps and other information to judge quality of your site and thus effect your SERPs. Using an on-server script also allows you to export the data in practically any way you need whereas GA only allows you what they want. You're also limited to the analytics they provide. What if you need more advanced analytics? They certainly won't code you up your own.

Piwik BUT, and this is a big, important BUT:

By default you have 2 options:
    1. Have one piwik install for each site. In other words 100 sites = 100 piwik instals and you dont have everything in one place.
    2. One single piwik install tracking multiple sites and on all of those sites you have http://trackerSite.com/piwik.js or something like that. This is a footprint if you're having many sites in a link network that you don't want to be obviously owned by same person.

What you have to do is use option (2) with a cloaking/"proxy" system. Basically you have to code a PHP script to use cURL to pass the data to main piwik. On the actual site you only need this piwik "proxy" not the entire piwik. That way each site looks like it has its own piwik but it doesn't, it's all centralized.

I brought a deal from a private network on here once who had the same UI for all sites

    They advertised as "no footprints"

Beware of a piwik footprint in a multsite scenario. Like madoctopus says, you will need somekind of cloaking script. I stopped using piwik for this reason and install a WP plugin
