    Hi everyone,

I have been through my fair share of manual Wordpress and WPMU installations lately. I finally accept that I need a better solution if I am going to make a lot of sites. I am weary and realize there must be a better way.

Here is what I understand is necessary:

    1. Mass Wordpress-MU installation from either desktop software or a relatively simple-to-install/use script that is compatible with hosts like Dreamhost. (no cpanel, though I am open to switching hosts IF someone can convince me that some cpanel auto-installer is THE ONE!)

    2. Either uses a 2.6+ MU install and allows custom mass-controllable plugins (because pingcrawl/linkcrawl and other social backlink plugs are my current method for ranking) OR it has some sort of built in system to get backlinks quickly.

    3. Has a relatively easy way to manage the sites and keywords of subdomain blogs and content collector feeds.

    4. Is either free or a one-time purchase under $75 usd.

I have checked out some of the mass installers. Wordpressmassinstaller uses an old version of WPMU. So far WPManagerDX sounds best, but I haven't been able to test because it requires cpanel and Dreamhost doesn't have cpanel. I also wish I could try Blogslammer before buying or somehow get it at the BHW $57 price, as it sounds good...does anyone know what version of WPMU it is compatible with and does it have an automated way to get backlinks (other than 200 ip's interlinking on diff c blocks)?

Thanks so much in advance for any good advice!
(especially those that don't plug a product you sell)

Here's how I do it (even on Dreamhost!).

    1) Download a typical site with all the plugins, themes etc. in place (forget the sql database - just the files in the home directory).

    2) Zip it all into one file.

    3) Upload that one file into the new domain/subdomain.

    4) Go to File Manager and extract/unzip the file.

    5) Setup a new SQL database in the control panel and link it into the new installation via a manual edit of the wp config file through the File Manager

    6) Voila, one new installation. Usually takes me 3 - 4 minutes tops (I have a number of typical installs already zipped up ready for uploading).

By setting up using a new database you can start from scratch without having to delete all the old material.

No external software to buy and I've yet to try any WP cloning software that can do it quicker, particularly with WPMU.

Thanks for the step-by-step. I actually have that set up already with a mysql backup ready to upload. (I haven't checked if it will maintain plugin settings and so forth on a new domain....anybody know how to clone a wpmu domain to domain and maintain plugin settings?)
    :)

I am actually asking about a script that installs all of the subdomains and everything as a wpmu install from say, a csv file.

Load a csv, it installs mu and adds 100 or more configured subdomain blogs in the mu install.

MU is great, it just needs more automation to use it on a dozen or more domains with 25+ blogs each.

Hopefully someone will post a solution here for both of us!

Great post Freller, will defenetly try this. Sill I'm wondering, if there is a program that can do the creation, the configuration and manage many WPMU's.

I'd be able to make such a script in PHP if you want. We can talk in PM for my charges.
