I'm looking to host my next website on DigitalOcean primarily for learning purposes as it will be my first time out of the SiteGround "ecosystem". I use Debian on a daily basis but I'm interested in what you guys think.

Does it even matter which distro i choose?

Distro really doesn't matter.

Most people go for Ubuntu.

DO has most of the tutorials / guides tailored for Ubunut.

I see. I think I’ll go with Ubuntu then. I’m sure those guides will come in handy. Thanks

If you're already familiar with Debian than Ubuntu will feel very similar.

ubuntu 18.04

Lookup "nginx ubuntu 18.04 digitalocean" for a good guide you can use for any self-managed setup

It does not matter which of those 3 Debian, Ubuntu and CentOs and which version, just don't use Ubuntu 20.10 yet...
Take one which you are familiar with...

centos is being widely use by almost any hosting company and thats the first choice for web servers, Its a clone free version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, but since you are familiar with debian it would be easier for you to work with ubuntu.

For regular users Ubuntu is just perfect and it comes with tons of beginner friendly tutorials compared to CentOS.
