    Just a quick discussion:

I'v got a brand new 5 paged site, which I plan on growing into something with hundreds of pages, but what is the best types of links to build for it? Each page will target a low competition, long tail keywords.

    What do you think?

Of course web 2.0 is still in, they are the heart of your backlinks. I would always make my 1st tier all web 2.0's with unique content.

    Yahoo is Bing now...

look for bing seo - they like things like table of content, using bing webmaster tools, links from site that rank high in bing.. etc

You just need link variety and you would do fine. just make sure you backlink every keyword as soon as you create it.

So as soon as I add an article, I need to get started on linkbuilding??

Does anybody know any manual linkbuilding techniques? All I know is building web 2.0's, and everything else needs to be bought .. what can I do manually to fill the time I have spare?

All link building techniques started off manually and they all can still be done manually. Draw up a list of link building techniques that you'd like to use, then hit Youtube and do 'how to' search

Join forums, write 20-30 posts, then add a link in the signature. This way you'll also get links from relevant pages.

When you say manual link building I assume you are talking about something that actually requires you to work, thus the "manual" definition.

Here are some basic examples of active, semi-active, and passive link building techniques. (there are TONS more techniques)

    Active:
Social Media engagement on places like Twitter, Facebook, and Google+ where you build a following and are engaged with users in you niche that you are targeting

Web 2.0 - This can fall under any of the active, semi or passive, but having a well developed authorship on your main web 2.0s like Hubpages, Squidoo, EzineArticles can be a value opportunity to build authority to your main site. It takes time and work, but this can generate organic and referral traffic.

Content - Creating beautiful, amazing, authoritative content that is free from any link building can, over time, provide you a steady stream on online income. However, this method requires you to not only know your niche, but become the expert, go to person, that people find and say, "yeah, this guy/ gal knows their stuff!" Not for the faint of heart, but a viable option to consider.

    Semi-Active:
Web 2.0 - Just use a service that does the work for you, where you have little engagement, but to make sure the content is live and to your liking. You might want to manage the comments coming back.

    Passive:
Article Directory submission services like UAW are a nice and easy way to get links to your main site, but can also be dangerous for your long term plan to keep properties up and running and making money. I am not saying you shouldn't necessarily point AD links to your main page, but there are risks.

    Hope this helps!

I'd really only do the high quality stuff manually. What can be done with the same quality using software, is stupid to do by hand.

Look at the type of backlinks your top 10 competitors are using and replicate their strategies, then if you still don't beat them, start expanding out into using other linking strategies.

A new competitor to my first Authority site has popped up within the last month at #5 from nowhere, ONLY using directory links (and 1 squidoo page which also links to the persons SEO site who they hired) - quite a few of the pages these links are on are PR3+.

The rest of the competitors in this Niche are ALL using spammy/crappy paid homepage links that are much worse quality than those on HPRS etc. These are big sites too, well respected large companies in the UK that you wouldn't expect to be using spammy techniques on their websites considering they probably earn over £100,000 a week.

As well as that, they're all using multiple satellite sites which all link together *facepalm*.

What i'm doing now is setting up a satellite site that is hosted on blogger, registered using an email adress that is unrelated to me in any way and privacy on the domain.
I'm packing out the site with articles and starting submitting the site to the same directories the new competitor is listed on - and a few more too.
I'll probably purchase a few blog roll links from some decent sites too.

Make sure your anchor text reads like it was written by someone who is really just interested in the site and not promoting it.

    1. Go for broad link diversity... links from MANY different domains/IPs
    2. Stay as relevant to your niche as possible
    3. Stay out of bad neighborhoods. Link farms, Forex sites, etc.
    4. Link to internal pages, not just your home page
    5. Vary your anchor text, no more than about 50% your main keyword. Use bare URLs, and phrases like Click Here and Visit Here, etc.

If you plan to make the site become an authority in your niche, I suggest Bookmarking, Article Marketing and Guest Posting. Don't try those spammy methods as this will make the Penguin angry.
