So I'm reading so much about how Google are deindexing sites, peoples popular websites suddenly fall in the rankings and get no traffic and so on and as someone who's just about to start out in internet marketing / websites / blogging it's worrying that one simple mistake can screw my whole website for good.

What are the legit ways to get traffic flowing to your site without getting into googles bad books?

sites were getting deindexed due to over optimization penalty

Pay Google for PPC ads is the only sure-fire guaranteed way of getting lots of traffic without pissing Google off.

^ Lol, yeah I guess adwords is a good bet for white hat traffic.. But people get banned from that all the time, too :p

I think good content, that people will share .. is one of the toughest / but most legit ways to build a site.

I've read that even exchanging links with too many other websites (even if they are legit websites, in your niche and you do it manually) too quickly can cause problems for you now. Is this true?

What exactly does that mean? Using your keyword too many times in your articles?

Google penguin is for the over optimization. Dont do heavy on page optimization for your blog/website and start creating quality backlinks on a regular basis. You will notice serp improvements soon. ;)

It is also a sure-fire guaranteed way to become bankrupt because most often they overcharge you for $1 CPC and up.

Well the sure-fire way is to obviously write good quality content, develop a relationship with your readers, write guest blogs to build your blog network (don't compete; instead strengthen the niche reader-base overall), write articles for ezine and articlebase, post Youtube videos which are instructional and can be tied to your blog posts and try to engage with potential readers on twitter.

Of course, everything I listed takes a lot of work and effort, and unless you are dedicating full-time to this blog it really is gong to be difficult to see a return on the investment of time you put in. That's why the question 'best legit ways to get traffic' is really unfair; the best legit ways assumes you have 40 hours in a day to kill as you slowly grow and develop your blog and website.

I listed all of the above because these are the steps my friend who is an auditor by day does to maintain her Fashion blog; she asked me about SEO about a year ago and was mortified by the methodologies and shortcuts my company employed for traffic.

There's actually a strong misconception of websites getting Sandboxed/Deindexed due to blasting backlinks; you have to realise that these are poor quality links and very poorly spun content that is getting websites deindexed. An easy way to increase backlinks is to use scrapebox, find blogs on all sorts of long-tail and organic keywords, high pr and limited OBL on the page and manually comment on say 10 a day and blast few others mixing up the keywords. Mix-up do follows and no follows and only ping during your first week to get the site indexed. As long as you have link velocity and there is nothing inorganic that raises a flag (ie: spikes of backlinks then suddenly no activity) your website will be fine.

You can automate; you just have to be smarter about it.

Great information dubious! Best thing to do is to make everything you do look natural. If you have money you can even cheaply outsource the posting of comments manually. Maybe get a VA to post maybe 20 or more comments a day.

Posting good, unique content will also help you to get traffic, but then you need to take it a step further though and think of ways to spread/share your content. People won't just share your content if they don't see it anyways.

Other good advice is you could write a report in the form of an eBook with links to your site and give it away for free on various platforms. Just a thought (not sure how effective this idea is, but I plan on doing this when I start my own review/blog site).
