    Thinkpad T440s are pretty great
they're really new, business class ultrabooks, and they're just good at what they do

Durable, powerful, reliable, everything you could want in a laptop.

Take a look to ASUS ROG and MSI GT
They are the best for this purposes :)
And they are within your budget

Any laptop nowadays can do those things (SD video at least).
Find something sturdy; build quality has gone down over the years.

Wait for Thinkpad T540p with IPS display for a month or so, it might be what you need on the top of your price range.
MBP with Retina is good too if you like Apple OS, not sure if you can get one for $2000 though.
If you have $3000-$4000 or more budget you may look on Dell Precision 6700 and 6800 workstations with IPS display.

Yeah I'd go with Lenovo ThinkPads. Powerful and very very practical. Very good build quality.

    Samsung
    Thinkpads
    MacBooks

All three of them do the trick and work well. If you are running multiple tools I would suggest a VPS.

If you got the money, I would go with macs and the ultrabooks from samsung.

I would recommend HP Envy series. Great value for the price in this range. They got much better graphics cards, compared to the competition.

Extremely over priced, your basically paying for the brand, the style and OS they have.

Regards to a laptop thats best for 2013 I couldnt say sorry, I have a dell XPS series at the minute, I bought it at the beginning of June last year so its defiantly out of date now :p

Well the cheapest way of doing something is to get a laptop with i5-i7 4th generation processor + a good video card, most probably gtx 600m or 700m series (newest). Search for the cheapest in that range, and make sure you have at least 640m or 740m video card.
For sure the laptops on the market won't include an ssd, so all you have to do is purchase one yourself. It takes 10 minutes to put an ssd inside a laptop. Don't go for a mac / alienware, you invest most of the money in the brand and OS instead of hardware.
